Selected files are not highlighted in GNOME Files

I am having an issue with file selection in GNOME Files. The bottom shows the number of selected files, but the files themselves are not being highlighted. This started occurring after I installed and used KDE, then uninstalled it and all its dependencies. I have tried changing the theme, including installing the Yaru theme, but the problem persists even with the Adwaita theme. I have also deleted the local configuration files for gtk-2, gtk-3 and gtk-4 in an attempt to reset, but the issue remains.

Any suggestions?

Update: Here is an screenshot showing the issue:

(You can see that is says "3 folders selected" but they are not highlighted).
