Success!

I connected via a VPN, and everything (cddb-query AND Kodi) works perfectly

I guess that means that the 4G network I use for internet connection (we have no useable land-line service) is blocking cddbp.

Why didn't I think of trying this before???

Actually, there's one more thing to do which is to please always remember to mark resolved threads by editing your initial posts subject - so others will know that there's no task left, but maybe a solution to find.

Of course. I'll do it now.

Some more digging seems to indicate that the o2 network blocks ports in the 8000 series for some reason.

Thanks again for your help. I would never have thought of this solution if you hadn't taken me through this analysis.
