[SOLVED]RAID volume randomly fails to mount on boot - "already mounte"

I have a RAID1 volume that I created with mdadm. I have it set to automount the filesystem in fstab. Randomly, it fails to mount, giving me the following error:

I just rebooted 5 times, and 3 of the times it failed. 2 times it succeeded............ on failure, it is most definitely not mounted. If I login and do "mount -a" it mounts immediately. I worked around this by disabling automount in fstab and making a startup script that just keeps trying to mount it over and over when it fails, and this works successfully every time. I just don't know why the fstab auto mount sometimes fails.

Like it says, dmesg may have more information … did you check dmesg and journal what happened there in which order?

Your mdadm.conf is weird, it references /dev/md/imsm0 which should have its own entry accordingly, but its not there. /dev/md/name style is problematic anyhow. But I don't use intel fakeraid so, not sure.

With mdadm raid you'd stick to /dev/md<number> UUID=… nothing else required. (Simplified from mdadm --detail --scan which is usually too verbose)

Yes, it contains even less information than the journal. Only 1 relevant line, "can't open blockdev".

"mdadm --detail --scan" is what I ran, which produced the output that I put in mdadm.conf...... like the wiki says to do.......

I changed the ARRAY line to only include "/dev/md126 UUID=.....", and also tried using the disk UUID with "/dev/disk/by-uuid/.....". Neither one works, the same error still happens.

"Can't open blockdev" is a generic error, you get it whenever whatever tried to load a filesystem superblock, fails to get a READ|WRITE|EXCL handle on the block device.

The actual cause for that error is then simply passed along to be interpreted by the caller. So the "Can't open blockdev" message itself does not tell you the reason.

I.e. when you get this message then something else is going on before it, while the actual error message follows it. And that's when you check your logs.

In your case its telling you "already mounted or busy" and there must be a reason for that, somewhere. You have to debug it yourself.

Two experiments:

1. add 'HOMEHOST <ignore>' to your mdadm.conf

2. add 'mdadm_udev' to your mkinitcpio.conf hooks, if it's not in there already

It was this that appears to have solved it, I have rebooted more than 10 times and it mounts every time now. I did not do this, because in the wiki it says you only need to do this if the root filesystem is on the RAID, which mine is not..... who knows.

It's not a solution, just a workaround. There's probably a race condition somewhere and assembling the raid earlier merely avoids triggering it.
