What is the proper way to get hal working ?
Do I need to start gnome-volume-manger ?
How do you get hal started seems that adding it to rc.conf [DAEMONS] does not work
Its odd never had many problems mounting until recently
Or is it just again lol

What's the message you get when you try to start HAL ?
I have dbus hal in [DAEMONS].
If you use gnome, you should use gnome-volume-manager if you want automount. You can configure it with gnome-volume-properties

To start hal I had to run it in a term .... which is ok
But I would rather get it working in DEAMONS do you use @ in front of hal & dbus?
If I run ipod from cli it does not pick up anything weird!
hal seems to find it [or may just be setup! to find it]
Would be nice to get it working again

No. I remember when I installed GNOME I added
portmap fam dbus hal to the DAEMONS line in rc.conf, without @
Then I installed gnome-volume-manager and set it up. That picked up my ipod just fine, without any udev rule written by me.

What specifically isn't working? Do you mean that if you do a ps ax hal isn't there, or do you mean you aren't getting a desktop icon?

hal is not starting at boot .... I will remove @ from dbus & hal in rc.conf
No banshee is not picking up ipod ...
I do not run gnome only Openbox so I have no need for desktop icons ...
If I can get ipod mounted without pmount/fstab/udev would be something
gtkpod picks it up :?

dbus needs to be started before hal. Actually, the hal deamon starts dbus, so you can start hal in the background when you remove dbus from your array.
