[SOLVED] Xorg memory leak after upgrade

After a system update on monday I've noticed an abnormal amount of memory being used by Xorg: upon further inspection it appears to be eating roughly 1MB every minute when the system is idle and much more when launching graphical applications.

I'm unsure what the cause could be as the Xorg package wasn't updated, nor any related library as far as I can tell.

Some details about my system, I'm using a fairly standard configuration:

linux-zen kernel
nvidia properietary drivers via nvidia-dkms
KDE plasma w/ SDDM

I've already attempted to first upgrade the mesa packages (mesa, mesa-vdpau, libva-mesa-driver) manually with the ones available in the testing repository (23.0.0-2) then downgrade them to the previous version before the update (22.3.4-1) with no effect.

pipewire upgrades, do you have a webcam? There's a potential memory leak in libcamera and wireplumber integration that "should" be fixed but there have still been reports for it still https://bbs.archlinux.org/viewtopic.php?id=283410

Generally speaking that upgrade log is older than "on monday" and it lacks a bunch of stuff like the latest kernel, so if that indeed was the newest update you might want to actually update again, there has been a new plasma stable release and a new kernel and a bunch of the stuff you have in that excerpt is already dated again.

I forgot to mention it, but performing a system update was the obvious first step I took and I'm facing the same issue after a full update. The pacman log relative to the update performed on monday was posted because it's after that update that I started experiencing this issue.

I do not have a webcam connected, but I used to before it stopped working, so I do have libcamera installed. I have applied the configuration fix suggested in the link you provided and rebooted. I don't see any mention of libcamera in the output of 'pw-dump' before or after adding the configuration file.

Unfortunately Xorg is still leaking memory as before

I installed both openbox and xrestop and performed a couple of tests. I'm not sure what the frame of reference for xrestop should be, but I checked whether the pixmaps in memory kept growing or if they were being deallocated.

KDE plasma session:

total pixmaps remained around 100K with KWin being the most intensive process using ~50K
opening and closing GUI applications showed a respective increase and decrease of pixmaps, suggesting that proper deallocation was performed with no leaks or increase over time
Xorg memory usage kept growing with the system idle, as previously reported

openbox session (with 4 xterm instances):

total pixmaps remained around 6K with openbox being the most intensive process using ~4K
same correct pixmaps deallocation as in the plasma session when opening/closing GUI applications
Xorg memory usage kept growing with the system idle, roughly at the same rate of 1MB per minute

KDE/openbox session:

same as plasma session

I'm guessing that excludes KDE/plasma as the culprit

It was conky all along, go figure... Ironically that's how I noticed the abnormal memory usage in the first place.

Downgrading it to 1.17.0-1 fixed the problem. Someone else already filed a bug report on the project repo a few hours ago, link for reference
