Modesettings - Combined Intel and Nvidia integrated video (Solved)

Hi I recently install a run file from the nvidia site matching my driver because the linux package wasn't sufficient for certain wine gaming functionality and somehow i managed to screw up my xorg after a while when i was trying to do modetting with optimus-manager so stupid me i didn't know how to uninstall a .run file, (offline installation) so I ended up having to delete each individual nvidia file that i perged from my system and had to reinstall xorg-server xorg-server-common and then i settled for xf86-video-vesa (for now) but i keep getting errors on my xorg.conf.d startx. And I can't start x. First i installed nvidia-lts. Then I uninstalled that. Then I found the exact nvidia linux driver for my computer off the nvidia site. managed to screw that messing around. now i'm back to vesa (for now). I need to understand what went wrong, more configuration understanding would be helpful with xorg.conf.d help. This is the output of my xorg.log

Re: Modesettings - Combined Intel and Nvidia integrated video (Solved)

Installing nvidia run files is a receipe for disaster and issues, don't do that. They do have an uninstall command in theory you should be able to use. Right now you have an issue with your keyboard config however that happened. What do you get from

pacman -Qkk 2>&1 > /dev/null
sudo journalctl -b

https://wiki.archlinux.org/title/List_o … n_services which actual graphics card is that? What's your output for

lspci -k

?

Then I found the exact nvidia linux driver for my computer off the nvidia site.

That makes 2 installs of nvidia outside of pacman.Go back to a backup from before you installed from the .run file .
did the first.

Incase you don't have such a backup - Your system is likely FUBAR and I'm tempted to advise you to reinstall from sratch.

However, if you want to try to get things working again (which will be a lot of work)  :

You're not using vesa, but modesetting for both cards .
The xorg log shows there's an error related to keyboard support .

[ 400.362] (EE) XKB: Couldn't open rules file /usr/share/X11/xkb/rules/evdev
$ pacman -F /usr/share/X11/xkb/rules/evdev

Try (re)-installing xkeyboard-config.

Re: Modesettings - Combined Intel and Nvidia integrated video (Solved)

reinstalling the xkeyboard-config solved my problem along with some other xorg packages. Thanks alot. I just want to say the arch community on forum is very supportive of noobs and semi-boobs you guys have alot of indepth knowledge about debugging command combinations in shell. I myself I guess you would say I'm a seminoob I have general knowlege of packman functionalitym makepkg and I memorized a combination of about 250 command combinations in shell. There is so much to linux to really exersise your brain.

Another thing if I could, do any of you know anything about the integrated intel/nvidia driver on an Acer laptop my computer is fairly recent i spent like $1000 last summer for a new laptop. I've tryed optimus manager and i had a problem. I guess I need better understanding of xorg.conf.d to configure modesetting better this is my video driver from <inxi -F>

Re: Modesettings - Combined Intel and Nvidia integrated video (Solved)

Please post the other command if it produces any output to check whether general package setup is correct.

As for getting nvidia to work, remove/uninstall optimus-manager, install the nvidia and nvidia-utils packages from the repository and add ibt=off to your kernel parameters to fix loading them on current kernels as noted in the blue notes on the nvidia wiki page: https://wiki.archlinux.org/title/NVIDIA#Installation this should fix the driver situation on it's own. Then to make use of the nvidia card on demand read https://wiki.archlinux.org/title/PRIME# … er_offload and install nvidia-prime and run applications you want to run on the nvidia card with prime-run $application

Re: Modesettings - Combined Intel and Nvidia integrated video (Solved)

I did "pacman -Qkk > /dev/null 2>&1" and it froze my shell. i just have nouveau installed for now i have the lts kernel installed. I just prefer it and I don't really feel like updating my boot folder with regular kernel. So my way to go would be the nvidia-lts package and nvidia-utils. I know the lts kernel has more drivers and certain things if I'm not mistaken. I mite need more clarification. I plan on installing that. Does the generic nvidia driver on arch linux, not neauveau the "nvidia" cover my card if not i will probably have to go with offline installation again but this time if i have a problem i will uninstall the package the right way. My computer has been out for about 2 years so hopefully the arch linux driver covers my video card. I plan on checking out prime and i will see how it goes. And get back to this thread.

Re: Modesettings - Combined Intel and Nvidia integrated video (Solved)

pacman -Qkk will run quite a while, you just have to let it run until it completes it can have no output (though it should at least have some modifications, but post the output do not interpret it and hose your system by trying unnecessary corrective action). For the other questions, yes that's correct nvidia-lts for the LTS kernel and yes the nvidia package covers your card. The LTS kernel doesn't have more drivers not sure where you got that from, if anything it will be less since new drivers enabling new hardware are generally not backported to the LTS kernel.

Ah, V1del, why did you ask for the output of a command that explicitly redirects all stdout and stderr to /dev/null?  That command can't possibly have any output.

Re: Modesettings - Combined Intel and Nvidia integrated video (Solved)

Did I flub the order (again?!) the intention was to redirect standard stdout to /dev/null but have stderr on stdout and thus easily copyable via pastebin clients or so, should be possible afaik and I''m pretty sure I used a variation of that correctly at some point, in doubt just do a > /dev/null so we do actually just get stderr (not in front of a linux currently or I'd have tested myself)

FUCK I did

pacman -Qkk 2>&1 > /dev/null

of course

Re: Modesettings - Combined Intel and Nvidia integrated video (Solved)

Ok so I did pacman -Qkk and it was very helpful, that was a combination I didn't yet know till now. I found several broken packages i re installed and then did a pacman -Syu. As far as the video driver i just removed linux-lts kernel installed the regular kernel replaced nuveau with nvidia runs great. I'm now in the process of trying prime for modesetting.

Re: Modesettings - Combined Intel and Nvidia integrated video (Solved)

I got another problem now my folders are kind of screwy what i did ibt=off on kernel paremeters broke my wifi and sound i tryed modprobe iwlwifi and it showed no wlwifi in lib/firmware/ then it said something lts folder there is conflicting firmware folders on my system that causing my wifi and sound to break. Then i lost my boot manager in bios now i can only boot windows. And i can boot into my linux with a boot disk. Windows 10 could of gave my linux partitions a virus. i'm contemplating doing  fresh install but i managed to get my video running pretty good in linux. i only use like 5 programs in my windows partition. i disabled windows updates cause the last time i had an install windows 10 updates messed up my grub and / foler a little bit and broke stuff i had this problem before. trying to be done with windows totally but there is just some stuff i can't seem to break away from in windows that i don't have enough indepth knowledge to run in wine/crossover. i use crossover for windows emulation in linux i payed 50 dollars for the program and i figured vout how to get most of my cool games running in it i will post debugging information once i get a response but in my linux partition i don't have wifi atm so i have to write dowbn debugging info and copy it to the forum.

Re: Modesettings - Combined Intel and Nvidia integrated video (Solved)

None of those are strictly related to the current thread. Please mark this one as [SOLVED] and make a new thread for your other issues. Generally speaking ibt=off doesn't break anything, the fact that iwlwifi can't find it's firmware could point to corruption in the linux-firmware package check/reinstall that. There have also been some reports that newer kernels might have some trouble with older firmware states in which case you will want to check whether there's an UEFI update for your mainboard. Windows is unlikely to give viruses to linux, what you should do however is disable it's fast startup option in the energy settings as that will lead to a hibernation which leaves your hardware in an undefined state. Bootloader contention issues should also be a thing of the past, provided you have a sane EFI implementation that properly allows multiple entries.
