Screen freezes and then goes back to login

I was trying to setup awesomeWM gaps and picom rounded  corners and it worked, but now if I open applications like Firefox, the page stutters when scrolling, almost like it's running on 30fps.
Here's what I remember doing before it broke. I disabled shadows and enabled rounding in the picom config and I enabled gaps in awesomeWM's config. I also tinkered with Intel config to change it to DRI2.
The screen freezes a minute into working in the terminal and then it goes back to login a minute after. This process is faster in Firefox except it doesn't go back to login, it freezes and stays that way. The cursor doesn't move either.
Any help is much appreciated, thank you.

Re: Screen freezes and then goes back to login

awesome or xorg crashed, from the context, likely xorg.

I also tinkered with Intel config to change it to DRI2

Sounds like you're using xf86-video-intel?
=> don't
And please post your Xorg log, https://wiki.archlinux.org/title/Xorg#General

Re: Screen freezes and then goes back to login

I undid everything that I changed, one by one, to narrow down the problem. The problem seems to be the radius of the window corner in the picom configuration.
What does picom use to draw curved corners on the windows? Why does it break the functionality of applications?
I will shortly post my xorg log.

Re: Screen freezes and then goes back to login

Depends on the backend, also post your picom config.

Re: Screen freezes and then goes back to login

#corner-radius = 20;

is commented?
Try the glx backend.

Re: Screen freezes and then goes back to login

I've commented out the radius because that's the one causing all the problems.
I'll try switching to glx and see if that makes any difference.

Re: Screen freezes and then goes back to login

I read that xrender is much better than the glx backend. How can I fix this issue without having to change the backend? Changing to glx doesn't make a diference, firefox still initially lags and the screen then becomes unresponsive after a minute.

Re: Screen freezes and then goes back to login

And I read that an orange monkey is the true president of the USA.
There's no simple answer to which backend is better™ - context and requirements matter a lot.

Either way, if the backend *indeed* does not matter (I actually tested this and corner-radius = 2 lags heavily on xrender, but doesn't on glx even at 32, despite fancy dual_kawase) you need to
a) stop using that feature for insufficient HW
b) file a bug against picom
