Random Freezes with Ryzen

I have random freezes since my switch to arch about a year ago.
It freezes my complete pc, nothing works anymore, not even REISUB or Power button to shutdown. Image keeps at it was in the moment of the freeze
It happens randomly 1-2 times per week, in rare cases multiple times a day.

My hardware is:
Ryzen 3900x with x570 chipset mainboard
amd 5700xt graphicscard

What i tried so far:
Got a new power supply
changed ram
Using different kernels
using different arch based distros
disable c6 (disable-c6-systemd)

This is my journalctl output right bevore my last freeze:

I think it does not happen on Windows, but i do not use it often to be sure about this.

Re: Random Freezes with Ryzen

https://wiki.archlinux.org/title/Ryzen#Troubleshooting

cpuidle_enter+0x2d/0x40

processor.max_cstate=5
processor.max_cstate=1

I think it does not happen on Windows

3rd link below. Mandatory.
Disable it (it's NOT the BIOS setting!) and reboot windows and linux twice for voodo reasons.

Re: Random Freezes with Ryzen

I have now:
processor.max_cstate=1
rcu_nocbs=0-23

in my Kernel Parameters.
This seems to have fixed the problem, running stable now since a week.
Had not looked further with the cstates, because i thought disable c6 was enough.
Should have focused on this Problem way earlier, thank you.

Re: Random Freezes with Ryzen

Did you see the other options (BIOS/UEFI settings and the aur package using msr)?

Re: Random Freezes with Ryzen

I cant find anything like the power setting in my UEFI (Msi x570 Gaming Edge Wifi, latest Bios version)

And the aur package was what i have already tried. It maybe reduced the freezes, but they where still there

Re: Random Freezes with Ryzen

I had a freeze again right now, but it happend in the moment i started a new Steam game for the first time. So maybe it was because of that.

The last logs before the freeze are:

no, normal arch repo version. After the freeze the game startet how it should.

Re: Random Freezes with Ryzen

That's different from

It freezes my complete pc, nothing works anymore, not even REISUB or Power button to shutdown.

Did the pointer move during the steam-related "freeze"?

Re: Random Freezes with Ryzen

After the freeze the game startet how it should.

So the system freezes™, you cannot even sysrq to reboot, but then the game starts, the system continues fine™ but doesn't process any intermediate events, including the sysrq (or powerbutton)??
And there's also no indication of that (kernel errors, crashed modules) in the system journal? (nb. that you'll likely have to "sudo journalctl -b" unless your UID is member in some admin groups)

No, i meant after the hard reset the game started. The freeze was identical to the freezes i had before.

No, not as far as i can tell. The last logs i posted are with full privileges

Okay, at least that makes sense.
Obviously the logs won't record that either.

You use an nvme?

Re: Random Freezes with Ryzen

I just had a freeze again while watching a youtube video.
It was just after starting (was in standby, looks like journalctl -b takes this as new start), so i uploaded the full log, maybe that helps:
https://gist.github.com/Jano1312/a5fa07 … bfd0fae802

You use an nvme?

Yes, Kingston KC3000 2TB, i will look into this. But i had the same problems with the samsung nvme ssd i used before.

Re: Random Freezes with Ryzen

Why is everyone trying to find the worst possbile pastebin services?
See the 1st link below.

The system does /not/ treat "standby" as "new start" - but if you thought the system was hibernated, you're missing the kernel parameter to the hibernation image (and possibly the resume hook for the initramfs), https://wiki.archlinux.org/title/Power_ … ibernation

There're of course no errors logged in this fresh boot, but if you're frequently "hibernating" and fail at that and possibly even boot windows in the meantime, that's a problem.

Still try the nvme related parameters, if IO to the root device blocks, you'll freeze the system at some point.

Re: Random Freezes with Ryzen

My bad, changed to better service.

I don't use hibernate, just suspend to ram.
I have removed windows completely in the meantime, since i don't need it anymore.

Right now its running with the "nvme_core.default_ps_max_latency_us=0" kernel parameter additionally.
So I wait if I get another freeze

Re: Random Freezes with Ryzen

Just got a new freeze. It was a new freeze, the mouse keept working and the open windows somehow, too.
Youtube video played to the end. Could swap between windows, but couldn't do anything more than this.
No changing to other screens with ctrl alt f2-f7, could not open any new programs.
Restartet with sysrq to reboot.

The journalctl output was 20mb in size, repeating the same few lines over and over.
This is the output with only error messages:

Re: Random Freezes with Ryzen

That's a list corruption triggered by dolphin, therefore *likely* FS or block device driver.
Can you upload the journal eg. to some google drive?

Re: Random Freezes with Ryzen

I have been on vanilla Arch at the beginning, but was not sure if my problems come from bad configurations, so i switched to manjaro. It was to far away from pure arch for me, so i switched to endavouros. This feels like a good compromise for me between vanilla and custom arch. And because my problem always stayed the same i thought this forum could be the right address.
Sorry for not reading the rules properly, i will go to endavouros forums for future problems (including related to this freezes).

But thanks for the support so far, with your help i got way further into the problem than i was before.
The last freeze was totally different, maybe my originally problem is even fixed now.

Hope its ok to discuss the last point to end:
I have disabled the mac address randomizer.
As far as i can see the problem was purely related to the wlan interface?
I completely disabled my wlan (and other unused) settings, because i don't use it anyway.

A last question, at some points in the past i have thought about upgrading my system, not only but also because of the freezes. To an AM5/Ryzen 7000 mainboard and processor.
Do you think this could be solution to my problems, if they still persist?
