[SOLVED] Issue when migrating from radeon to amdgpu

I have a R9 270 GPU and I can't use vulkan on the radeon driver, so I started to figure out how to fix it and found the only solution - to switch to amdgpu. I have tried

GRUB_CMDLINE_LINUX_DEFAULT="...radeon.si_support=0 radeon.cik_support=0 amdgpu.si_support=1 amdgpu.cik_support=1 amdgpu.dc=1 amdgpu.dpm=1 amdgpu.modeset=1"

but after updating grub and restarting, the image on the monitor stopped updating. The system starts, but I can't see anything.

Remove amdvlk and amdgpu-pro* drivers for a start, they aren't going to support this GPU anyway.

Generally speaking none of this will ever work unless the driver in use line in lspci switches to amdgpu, you can also drop the majority of these kernel parameters and just use the baseline of

radeon.si_support=0 amdgpu.si_support=1

if the outputs above are from a working boot and intentionally removing the kernel parameters post

sudo journalctl -b-1

I removed drivers, wrote modules

MODULES=(btrfs amdgpu radeon)
BINARIES=(/usr/bin/btrfs)
FILES=()
HOOKS=(base systemd autodetect keyboard sd-vconsole modconf block filesystems fsck)

and restarted with

radeon.si_support=0 amdgpu.si_support=1

but anyway it didn't help
As you said, the outputs from

sudo journalctl -b-1

are from a working boot, and i didn't notice intentionally removed kernel parameters.
Sorry if i did something wrong.

No drivers are loaded at all in that output which shouldn't happen just from these parameters. Which vids and pids does the card have ( lspci -nn square brackets at the end) You might also want to post and or fix that /etc/modprobe.d/blacklist.conf the proper format for a blacklist entry there would be

blacklist iTCO_wdt

instead of the kernel parameter variant you currently have in there.

You could have the lol AMD situation in which they reused vids and pids and this not actually being a GCN card and thus not actually valid for amdgpu, but that shouldn't make all traces just vanish from the log.

For all I can find that's a "curacao pro" or pitcairn chip (which are GCN 1.0, regardless of where those islands are) and lspci considers both.

modprobe -c | grep -i amdgpu

The system starts, but I can't see anything.

Can you ssh into it?

No, not at all. The modprobe config is inconspicious.

is it urgently needed?

It would help as you could inspect the malfunctioning system "live" (whether amdgpu is loaded, can be loaded, throws errors etcetc)

Let's return  to

the image on the monitor stopped updating. The system starts, but I can't see anything.

and ignore the journal you posted.

Remove the "quiet" paramter and boot only the multi-user.target (2nd link below)
Same symptoms?

Do you reboot out of this using the power button?
If so, don't - use ctrl+alt+del (frenetically, if needed) or https://wiki.archlinux.org/title/Keyboa … el_(SysRq) to hopefully preserve the entire journal.

Now we at least get a "clean" crash. Try disabling resizable bar in your UEFI would be my first guess, maybe also assuming this is a kernel bug, test whether you can reproduce the issue on the LTS kernel.

Afaik you need radeon to still look at the device so that si_support is properly and effectively disabled and blacklisting the module would prevent that.

Yes, means V1del is right about the cause and (probably) wrong about the radeon condition.
To be absolutely sure you could disable the resizable bars (you probably did) and remove the radeon blacklisting.

I successfully booted with turned off resizeble bar and with

GRUB_CMDLINE_LINUX_DEFAULT="loglevel=3 nowatchdog radeon.si_support=0 amdgpu.si_support=1"
