DISCLOSURE
I originally posted in this thread thinking my issue is very similar, but as it was closed I'm creating a new one.
THE POINT
After almost 11 years it seems, that this kind of problem affected my laptop.
It's a very difficult issue to trace, as only some games (Civilization VI, Alien Isolation) are affected, but other (Stellaris, Planescape Torment, Tropico) aren't.
It looks as the screen freezes on load, usually before it gets to the game menu, and then I cannot do anything but a "hard" restart. No key combination seems to work, although I can set a schedule for a restart in the console that will save me the need for a manual power off.
The same issue seems to affect one of Basemark GPU tests, but only the one utilizing OpenGL, not the Vulkan test. Maybe it's related to OpenGL and my dual GPU configuration (I have a laptop with Intel's iGPU and nVIDIA dGPU). All the games I run with prime-run command though, but it looks as there could be some kind of a conflict.

You have looked at https://wiki.archlinux.org/title/Steam/ … ization_VI and https://wiki.archlinux.org/title/Steam/ … _Isolation ?
Disliking systemd intensely, but not satisfied with alternatives so focusing on taming systemd.

I was using the workaround for Civilization VI on my previous Arch installation with great success, but this time it's something different. I also don't think that's the case described for Alien Isolation.
While testing I decided to try to run Alien Isolation under a Wayland session instead of Xorg, which I prefer, and the game seems to run great (at least for couple minutes). Does that mean it's X-server related, or maybe some drivers (Intel iGPU?) aren't affected by some bugs under Wayland?

Do you have xf86-video-intel installed ?

Nope, I uninstalled it previously, as it was responsible for some Xorg issues and glitches.

But even a scheduled restart would preserve the journal - and thus hopefully some error messages?
Maybe also in your xorg log?

OK, that's pretty weird. After running Alien Isolation under Wayland session without any issues, now the game seems to run also under X
I don't have the slightest notion what is going on, or maybe rather what was going on, but I'll try tu get a little bit deeper into this in the coming days.
