Re: Help - problems with GNOME 2.6 install

Hi,
with the new updates I've fixed the Settings Daemon problem but when I get into Gnome 2.6 (that I've installed on a clean system)  I can't see gtk themes and icons..

When I try to go to the themes settings in the desktop preferences I get this error:

"The default theme schemas could not be found on your system. This means that you probably don't have metacity installed, or that gconf is configured incorrectly."

I think this is related to the "gconftool" errors that I get installing Gnome 2.6 .. i tried also to completly remove gnome and reinstall it with pacman -Sy gnome but the problem still here.

thanks in advice for your help

bye,
Giovanni.

Same problem here.   I've updated the entire gnome group, and re-installed with no luck.

Re: Help - problems with GNOME 2.6 install

I've fixed it in this way:

(logout from gnome)

pacman -Rc gnome
pacman -S gconf
pacman -S gnome
pacman -S gdm

I've also removed all gnome related prefs in my home folder but I don't think you need to do it..

bye,
Giovanni.

Re: Help - problems with GNOME 2.6 install

well i am building a fix now.
it will run ldconfig right after installing gconf, so it should go fine then..

for now i would say :

pacman -Rc gconf
pacman -S gconf
pacman -S gnome

the reason the whole install went wrong is because at the end of the pacman -S sequense ldconfig is started. so in the time before that, any install packge won't be able to find gconf wink

pacman -Rc gconf
pacman -S gconf
pacman -S gnome

Re: Help - problems with GNOME 2.6 install

Thanks.

Only another info.

Now I launch Xfce4 from command line "startxfce4".

Well, how can I launch gnome in the same mode?  Startgnome is sufficinet after installing it?

And in automatic mode, I should change .xinitrc file.

Thanks.

Ciao from Italy.
Luca.

Thanks, Arjan!   That makes sense.   I'll try this later when I get home from work.

Re: Help - problems with GNOME 2.6 install

How about a little Howto for those who wanna do a fresh Gnome 2.6 install and setup ( gnome-session and gdm )?

Not that I don't know what to do, from posts hear one knows that he must install gconf then gnome. But newcomers a week or so from now would install without seeing this thread, beside adding the other gnome-session/gdm steps woud be nice.

Yes!  This fixes everything!  Now, let me say a huge thanks to Arjan for coming up with a VERY SPARSE install.   Almost everything I needed had to be installed separately (like gnome-terminal, gnome-media, gedit, gnome-applets, gnome-netstaus, gnome-alsamixer, gnome-utils, etc., etc., etc.)

I appreciate the fact that I can choose what to install on top of the basic GNOME, but I fear that those new to Linux, or new to GNOME may be confused when they see almost no functionality installed by default using the standard 'pacman -S gnome' command.

I'm not asking you to change this install, we just may want to let users know they need to add all of this stuff AFTER the GNOME installation.

Just arrived home, did a pacman -Sy and tried to install gnome again. And now everything worked beautifully  big_smile
Thanks for fixing the problem so fast.

Did you read any of the announcements?  They should all be in gnome-extra.

Can't find the gnome-extra package, isn't it out yet? If not yet, don't assume that I'm rushing it, I can wait big_smile.

It's not a package, it's a group.

Announcements?  You mean like on the home page?  It says nothing about the gnome-extra group.   Nor do any of Arjan's instructions througout this thread.  So forgive me, I was not aware that all one had to do was 'pacman -S gnome-extra'.

But, thanks for letting me know.

Re: Help - problems with GNOME 2.6 install

Strange.  It said so in the announcement I saw.  Looks like it said so on the ML but not on the front page.

Yeah, you're right - it was mentioned on the mailing list about the two GNOME groups.  Guess I need to subscribe to that list. smile

I have the same problem. I tried these commands but didn't help.

pacman -Rc gnome
pacman -S gconf
pacman -S gnome
pacman -S gdm

Any suggest?

Re: Help - problems with GNOME 2.6 install

I have just upgraded to gnome 2.6, installed many times, and I just reinstalled it this way for pacman to spit out no errors...

pacman -S gconf
pacman -S gnome

But, when I get into gnome, before anything really comes up I get a lot of errors.  One about gnome settings daemon beings restarted too many times, and one about nautilus can't be started now.  What should I do?
