How configurable are the window locations in the various modal wms?
Hi!
I am currently using i3, and I like it. I use a single ultra-wide monitor.
However, I will start having a camera placed in front of the monitor. It will obscure the middle lower part of the screen, so I'd like to configure things so that no windows are placed there. It could be nice to have a window above the camera, with the other participants' cameras, that way it'll look roughly like I am looking "at them" when I look at their camera feeds.
If I'll solve this with i3, I'll use i3-msg and place floating windows in predictable locations. It might be the best solution as I can also control the size that way so that sharing a window will be like sharing the screen when using a normal monitor.
As I only really know i3 I am curious how configurable other window managers are in terms of layout. Would it be easy to solve in your favorite modal wm?

It sounds like you want a manual tiler which i3 is not (not really). Most popular tiling wms are dynamic tilers, but there are a handful of good manual ones that could very readily do what you want. The first that comes to my mind is herbstluftwm.
