[SOLVED] no keyboard nor mouse after starting X running i3 and polybar

I update my system daily mostly because I like to know which packages are getting updated and when.

But I'm stumped by this new situation.

After a reboot (cannot recall every package updated), keyboard fine to log in, but I "startx", same as I always have, and i3 starts and I see my Chromium browser, but only at that point my keyboard is not working and I can see a mouse pointer at the central far left of my 2nd monitor, but I cannot move it.

This is a Dell XPS 15 system that I've been running for years, pretty much 24/7.  But I've run out of ideas to troubleshoot.

Tried:
--journalctl - nothing I could get out of it
--.xinitrc - tried simplifying it but no luck

a dmesg shows "Failed to enable mouse on isa0060/serio1  ... but yes I've tried multiple mouses and the fact that the keyboard is not working either...

I run a lot of things off a USB strip (drives, keyboard, mouse, and more) so naturally I tried taking that out of the equation completely and just plugging a single mouse into the laptop instead.

I'm just out of ideas.

Anybody??

There was a major kernel update to 6.3.1 and it is likely the only component capable to have such an effect, so try downgrading that to 6.2.13 or installing the LTS kernel additionally or so.

Thanks and yes now you mention I do recall that it jumped to 6.3.x

Can you refresh my memory on how to downgrade that?  I do have the downgrade app but I've never tried to downgrade a kernel.

Thanks!

The kernel is nothing special to pacman nor the downgrade app, just downgrade the linux package. Somewhat of a special consideration if you are using e.g. the nvidia module you need to downgrade that to the matching kernel version, e.g. 530.41.03-6 to match the linux package, or if you use -dkms versions you'll need to also downgrade linux-headers appropriately.

Re: [SOLVED] no keyboard nor mouse after starting X running i3 and polybar

thanks, am learning

unfortunately, even after downgrading both linux and even i3-wm, ... stuck in same original boat sad

How can X launch, launches i3, everything looks more or less normal, but then no keyboard, no mouse movement.

I'm almost ready to reinstall Arch, and I have many important things backed up into github repos and things, dotfiles, things, but this would still mean 5 years of minor changes and such, just gone.

I could see doing that if I couldn't boot or something, but no, I can boot, can even run i3, just no mouse and no keyboard.

Re: [SOLVED] no keyboard nor mouse after starting X running i3 and polybar

Do you get a keyboard if you switch VT away from xorg again? Do you use some (python) tool for mouse gestures/keybinds or so from the AUR you'd need to rebuild?

Post your xorg log: https://wiki.archlinux.org/title/Xorg#General and journal

sudo journalctl -b

do you potentially have config lying around for xorg referencing evdev? Did you pay attention to the mkinitcpio generation did you get an error accessing a certain sys device? Check/post pacman.log https://wiki.archlinux.org/title/List_o … n_services

Here are (hope I did correctly), my i3.log, my Xorg.0.log, and my journalctl -b.

If I've missed something please let me know, as I have too much swimming in my head right now.

Re: [SOLVED] no keyboard nor mouse after starting X running i3 and polybar

Same problem with an AMD 5600G and its iGPU.

downgrading kernel to 6.2.13 fixed the problem.

The weird thing is 1920x1080 works with kernel 6.3.1 but 2560x1440 does not.

No, not "same problem".

Did you notice that this thread is about the input devices and not the output or the ability to start a graphical session in general?

Open a new thread and post the xorg logs from both kernels there.

Re: [SOLVED] no keyboard nor mouse after starting X running i3 and polybar

OK I think I *may* be back in business.

I was doing various searches and I came across this one, with id=272132.  At the bottom it's suggested to install xf86-input-evdev.

I know, I know:  Don't select random things from internet searches, but I was out of ideas and so far at least, this seems to work for me.

Can anybody explain to me why this worked?  Why it was necessary.

I'd like to see things continue to work at least through the day before marking as solved but I will soon.

Thanks again for the various help and ideas.

Re: [SOLVED] no keyboard nor mouse after starting X running i3 and polybar

The problem was that the xf86-input-libinput got corrupted and you were lacking any rules to apply to your devices.
Installing xf86-input-evdev simply got you similar rules from that driver picking up.

You can re-install xf86-input-libinput, make sure /usr/lib/X11/xorg.conf.d/40-libinput.conf gets recreated and then may uninstall xf86-input-evdev again.
You can also use the latter instead of the libinput drivers.

https://wiki.archlinux.org/title/Xorg#Input_devices

What has corrupted the package is hard to tell but apparently something™ removed the entire /usr/share/X11/xorg.conf.d path?

Re: [SOLVED] no keyboard nor mouse after starting X running i3 and polybar

Ok, thanks all for the info.  This libinput stuff is new to me even though I've used Arch for years.

I suppose I'll just use the evdev for the time being because it seems to be doing everything I need it to.

Will mark resolved.
