TV EDID Override?

Hi, I'm trying to use my arch min pc with my Samsung TV via an HDMI switch.   The issue I am having is that when I switch away and return the TV says "mode not supported" or "resolution not supported".  Turing the TV off and back on again 'fixes' the issue.

..Oddly this issue does not occur when directly connected to the TV but only when using the switch in between.  Here is the xorg log that shows what happens when I toggle back to the computer.  It starts with a 'quirked edid' entry that seems to be the issue.  I was thinking perhaps I could disable this or correct this.  I also have pulled the edid file from the TV but I'm not sure what to do next. 

My guess is that the 'quirked EDID' causes the TV to react as it does even though the computer then properly pulls/uses the correct info.  ..Or not? smile

Thanks @seth.  I tried that but no luck.  There was a slight change in the log when switching however. 

Put edid file in /usr/lib/firmware/edid/tv.bin.  Updated grub with "drm.edid_firmware=edid/tv.bin".

What edid file exactly? Extracted from the Tv or the default one?

Please post the entire Xorg log and you probably also want to drop xf86-video-intel

I pulled the edid file from HDMI-A-1 and verified it has the same md5 as what I had placed in /usr/lib/firmware/edid.  ..I assme I was correct by simply renaming it to a .bin file? 

Here is a full output of the Xorg log.  Two comments.  I just noticed that if my other device on the HDMI switch is inactive then I was able to toggle to/from the computer.  As soon as I activated the other device then I had the "mode not supported" issue upon return when switching.   Those are the two different toggles at the bottom of the log after a reboot.

Your Tv does probably not have the size of a postcard?

I don't expect that to be the cause of

The issue I am having is that when I switch away and return the TV says "mode not supported" or "resolution not supported".  Turing the TV off and back on again 'fixes' the issue.

Open a terminal and run

sleep 30; xrandr --verbose 2>&1 | tee /tmp/xrandr.unsupported; echo '\a'

Within the next 30 seconds, switch forth and back and wait on the unsupported resolution until xrandr ran (ideally you'll get a beep from the console to hint that)
Post the output (also found in /tmp/xrandr.unsupported)

Oddly this issue does not occur when directly connected to the TV but only when using the switch in between.

What does edid-decode report when not using the switch?

And here is the read-edid output when directly plugged to the PV.  No results.  I get the same when connected via switch.

Not read edid, but edid-decode. Basically same as in #4, but on the direct connection (just to see whether the dimensions are bogus there as well)

Same BS size, that's from the Tv and a red herring.

Is the output active while you switched away?
What if you

xrandr --output HDMI-1 --off

before switching away and then

xrandr --output HDMI-1 --auto

after switching back?

So with

xrandr --output HDMI-1 --off

the screen of course turns off.

But when I blindly execute

xrandr --output HDMI-1 --auto

upon returning to the computer nothing changes and tv remains as was stating 'mode not supported' with an explanitory comment saying "Resolution not supported."  ..and to fix the resoultion of the external device. 

Does this narry it down in any way?  ..I had tried a different edid HDMI switch but had the same results so returned it so I wouldn' think it's anything specific to this particular switch..

For the record my specific TV is a Samsung UN65EH6000.

Do you have a different monitor available to try?
And/or a different HDMI source (computer)?

I suspect the HDCP handshake "fails", and since toogling the TV "fixes" it, it's more likely between switch and TV than switch and PC.
What's the other device connected to the switch?

Yes, the other device is an Android TV box - Box R 4K.   And I could also try connecting my laptop up to the switch and pulling records from that.  It is Manjaro.

So, as a first comment.  When I hook my laptop up.  It detects the monitor and I can use it.  With the "Display" configuration widow open... when I toggle away the TV display disappears.  WHen I toggle back it reappears.  .. But the TV is again unhappy with the laptop and has the same mode not supported message. ...

What happens if you switch between the notebook and the arch system (ie. keep the android box away)?

Also:
Afaiu you're not switching between different outputs but use the switch to manage multiple HDMI inputs?
According to https://www.samsung.com/us/video/tvs/UN … FXZA-specs the Tv has 2 HDMI inputs - do you need the external switch at all?
What model is that switch?
I guess not a receiver (Denon, Yamaha, … the things where you can manage half a dozen inputs and 2 video outputs and some extra audio)?

Now that was an interesting question and really gives us something to work with. smile

So...If I don't wake up the Android TV then I can freely toggle between my mini-pc and laptop and it works perfectly. No issues.
If I wake up the ATV and begin toggling I immediately lose my pc and laptop.  But it's not 100% of the time.  Every 5th cycle or so it will work on both the laptop and mini pc then back to the 'mode' problem
I also tried it with a regular DVD player with basically the same results. Once it was on and in the cycle I only rarely could get the computers to show up.

So then I tested how it would react if I unplugged the ATV or DVD (depending on which was in that extra slot) once they were in the cycle and my computers weren't reliably showing up.
When I unplug the DVD player I could toggle back and forth and eventually I got my comptuers to come up. Once up they were totally solid from that point forward.
When I unplug the ATV I coud not get the comptuers to come back after a bunch of toggling.  In that case I had to replug the miin pc and after several rounds of toggling the computers came back and were solid from that time forward.

Conclusion: It seems that these other non-computer devices have some way of interfering with PC use of the switch?  I wonder what these devices do that PCs do not do?

The model of the switch is UGREEN 40234 which says it is HDMI 2.0. I had also tried a more expensive OREI UHD-401ARC (HDMI 1.4, 1.3 & 1.2) with similar results.

Yes, you are correct about the TV.  Since we only have two inputs I have been giving preference to the devices we use most; currently the ATV and Nintendo Switch (kids).  So the DVD and mini PC were more meant as secondary.  But I could in fact reserve a primary input for the mini-pc if needed.  I was hoping not to only because swiching is more convienient on the primary inputs.  .. This may be the final straw before getting a new TV.

Any other thougths/wisdom about what is happening?  It seems we have at least identified a major clue now.  ..And one that may make it impractical to do what I was originally intending?
