Suspend/hibernation issue only on lid closing

Hi all,
I have a thinkpad and I get this strange behavior regarding hibernation/suspension.

It works fine if I put the laptop in hibernation/suspension via the gnome menu.
It works fine if I put the laptop in hibernation/suspension via the gnome menu and then close the lid.

It does not work (it is impossible to resume) if I directly close the lid, without putting the laptop in hibernation/suspension via the gnome menu before closing the lid.

How can I fix it?

Thanks a lot.

Re: Suspend/hibernation issue only on lid closing

Well, I am not using Gnome right now, so I cannot explore things.  What is Gnome configured to do when you close the lid?  Sleep? Hibernate? Hybrid sleep?

Let us ensure we are using the same terminology.
I define sleep as suspend to RAM and remain partially powered to allow the RAM to be be refreshed.
I define hibernate as suspend to disk by writing important parts of RAM to disk and powering down, and restoring RAM from disk at power up.
Hybrid means start by sleeping, and after a while hibernate.

If you are suspending to disk, are you using a swap partition or a swap file?
Post the output of cat /proc/cmdline

Does your system support IRST (Intel Rapid Start Technology)? If so, you may want to read this: https://bbs.archlinux.org/viewtopic.php?id=278124

What happens if you use the command systemctl suspend  ?   How about systemctl hibernate   ?

Describe what happens when you try to resume after closing your lid.  Any display? Any error messages?

Finally, does the journal provide any clues?  After you reboot, use journalctl -b -1 to look at the logs from previous boot.

Re: Suspend/hibernation issue only on lid closing

Hi,
thank you very much for answering.

We are on the same page for the terminology.

Gnome is set to suspend the system when the lid is closed.

Both the suspend and hibernate commands work fine (hibernate is much slower than suspend so).

the cat command prints:
BOOT_IMAGE=/vmlinuz-linux root=UUID=cf986a2a-a351-4c3f-a394-10a45cbbbe47 rw resume=UUID=8a3d70a3-c241-431c-91c1-21c9929a7e5d loglevel=3 quiet ibt=off nvidia_drm.modeset=1

If I close the lid I get a black screen, without any message.

The journal log is very long...how I can filter it?

Thanks a lot.

Re: Suspend/hibernation issue only on lid closing

Hi,
it looks like I am in this situation .

In my /etc/systemd/logind.conf there were these lines:

HandleLidSwitch=suspend-then-hibernate

But it looks like suspend-then-hibernate is no longer supported.

If I set it to hibernate or suspend it works.

It is not clear to me, when I close the lid, how to put the laptop in suspension and after a while in hibernation mode.

Thanks a lot.

Sorry, I've been out of town on business.  Everything in post #4 look rational.
I don't recall, but does Gnome-Tweaks have any knobs?

Edit: Typo

Gnome has an option, but it is just to turn on/off "suspend when the lid is closed".

I would like to have suspension and after a while hibernation.

No idea how to get hibernation after a certain amount of time in suspension?

I got bored and went back to Gnome for a while.  Looked at my setup.  Try: https://extensions.gnome.org/extension/ … us-button/
