I ran across a statement on the internet that stated it was not necessary to reboot my machine after doing updates/upgrades. I've also heard that if it's on the internet it must be true. :-)
So I'm here asking for an accurate answer.

you have to restart active processes for the update to apply. this is done most easily with a reboot.
there are ways to patch the kernel during runtime. it's only worth the effort on servers with 100% uptime.
I don't think it's necessary to do a reboot directly after an update, but I'd do one occassionally.
Why I run Arch? To "BTW I run Arch" the guy one grade younger.
And to let my siblings and cousins laugh at Arsch Linux...

In addition nb. that if you update the kernel you'll no longer be able to load modules for the old (running) kernel what might be relevant for non-permanent devices or filesystems
You'd have to either
- pre-load potentially later required modules
- perserve the modules of the old kernel, https://aur.archlinux.org/packages?O=0& … dules-hook
- reboot
to deal w/ that.

I guess I'll just reboot like I have been doing.
Thanks!
