(Abandonned) MSI A88XI AC + A6-6600K ISO won't boot (UEFI or Legacy)

[PART1]
I Just bought a used MSI A88XI AC motherboard which came with a A6-6400K APU and I am so far unable to boot archlinux live iso (either in UEFI or BIOS) using the integrated

I am stuck a boot loop. few seconds after I select the entry in Grub I can see a post code 92 for a moment and it goes back to boot menu.
Also I do see some log during the boot attempt.

[edit] Removed logs capture since they were not relevant

I have successfully installed Windows 10 (I do experience some drivers crashes when using chrome). I have also succeffully booted with the latest Ubuntu LTS live iso so I believe the mother board is OK

I am at the moment using only the integrated graphic card (since having a 'decent' igd on the GPU is the main reason I purchased this card/apu).
but I'll try with a PCI-E card to see if I have the same behavior.

For history I think my problem is related to this old post => https://bbs.archlinux.org/edit.php?id=2099396

[PART2]
Using a PCI-Express card I was able to boot and install archlinux on my SSD. It is booting fine when using a PCI-E card but as soon as I try to fallback to the IGD I run in to troubles
I do see the grub menu and then I can briefly see the login prompt but I don't have time to do anything and the display goes black and It reboot back to the grub menu

[PART3]
I managed to get it to 'work' by adding nomodeset to my kernel params but I am not actually sure what is going on. I never had any issuers before with integrated cards but it was on Intel CPUs.

Re: (Abandonned) MSI A88XI AC + A6-6600K ISO won't boot (UEFI or Legacy)

I managed to boot without using nomodeset by disabling radeon driver.
Since the IGD is a Southern Island I am trying to enable amdgpu driver instead but without success atm

When I run startx I get two errors (most likely config errors on my side)

Please use [ code ] tags for such outputs, see https://bbs.archlinux.org/help.php#bbcode

post full output of lspci -knn (run as user) and xorg log from a startx attempt .
( Incase you're not sure where to find xorg logs, check https://wiki.archlinux.org/title/Xorg#General .)

Disliking systemd intensely, but not satisfied with alternatives so focusing on taming systemd.

Re: (Abandonned) MSI A88XI AC + A6-6600K ISO won't boot (UEFI or Legacy)

Generally, the amdgpu driver will not work while you have nomodeset in your kernel parameters. You'll have to fix the boot to work without that parameter first.
Sorry, I read your post twice and somehow still did not see that you managed to do that.

It is also not necessary to use xf86-video-amdgpu, the default modesetting xorg driver should work just fine with the amdgpu kernel module

Sorry, I read your post twice and somehow still did not see that you managed to do that.

I did install xf86-video-amdgpu (it was in the ArchWiki page).

I blacklisted radeon in /etc/modprobe.d/radeon.conf

blacklist radeon

And set some module parameters in /etc/modprobe.d/amdgpu.conf

options amdgpu si_support=1
options amdgpu cik_support=1

I also enabled amdgpu module in /etc/mkinitcpio.conf

MODULES=(amdgpu)

I also added theses lines to my linux kernel params in /etc/default/grub though I am not sure both are needed.

GRUB_CMDLINE_LINUX_DEFAULT="loglevel=3 quiet amdgpu.si_support=1 amdgpu.cik_support=1"

I have tried many different options so my configuration might be messed up atm

Everything I'm seeing says HD 8470D is a Terascale architecture, so you need to be using radeon instead of amdgpu.

Edit: too late, last post confirms it. You blacklisted the driver you need.

Everything I'm seeing says HD 8470D is a Terascale architecture, so you need to be using radeon instead of amdgpu.

Edit: too late, last post confirms it. You blacklisted the driver you need.

Hmm ok but when the radeon driver is enabled it won't boot (without nomodeset)

Re: (Abandonned) MSI A88XI AC + A6-6600K ISO won't boot (UEFI or Legacy)

Booting (without any modifications) with a linux Mint ISO

lspci -k gives

00:01.0 VGA compatible controller: Advanced Micro Devices, Inc. [AMD/ATI] Richland [Radeon HD 8470D]
Subsystem: Micro-Star International Co., Ltd. [MSI] Richland [Radeon HD 8470D]
        Kernel driver in use: radeon
        Kernel modules: radeon

I don't understand why it is not working out of the box with Archlinux (kernel too recent ?)

We need a log from a failed boot. Journalctl has a -b option to choose what boot you're looking at.

journalctl -b shows me only the lastboot (which doesn't fail because I have to use nomodeset)

You can pass

journalctl -b-1

for the boot prior to your current boot. (...-2 for the one before that and so forth)

Kind of looks like it's still trying to use amdgpu. Did you modify mkinitcpio.conf?

I did yes and I rebuilt the ramdisk

Anyways I restarted from scratch without even installing amdgpu at all and I think the logs I posted were not actualy the good ones.
Problem is now I don't have any logs at all when the machine won't boot

I can only see logs for boot where I append nomodeset to the kernel params

I feel like running a loop. Without nomodeset it won't boot and with nomodeset X won't start
Damn I read eveywhere that AMD cards are better for Linux but I never had any troubles like that with Nvidia/Intel (even with super old cards)

I do not understand why amdgpu still appears

Re: (Abandonned) MSI A88XI AC + A6-6600K ISO won't boot (UEFI or Legacy)

You're not the first where a card with terascale tech is listed as being supported by amdgpu which is impossible (amdgpu kernel module only works on GCN and later. )

May 16 20:23:17 archpinball2 kernel: DMI: MSI MS-7913/A88XI AC (MS-7913), BIOS V1.6 12/12/2014

I was hoping there would be a later firmware, but that is not the case, https://www.msi.com/Motherboard/A88XI-AC/support .

Which kernel version do the live isos that boot (linux mint & ubuntu) use ?

Disliking systemd intensely, but not satisfied with alternatives so focusing on taming systemd.

Yeah BIOS is already at latest version.

The Mint iso I tried is using 5.17

I Downloaded previous arch isos one by one and I finally found one that boot => 2022.11.01 which uses kernel 6.0.6.

Edit : Unfortunately at some point during installation archfi force me to choose a kernel  (linux => 6.3.2 / lts => 6.1.29). I need a way to  downgrade to the kernel that works !

Re: (Abandonned) MSI A88XI AC + A6-6600K ISO won't boot (UEFI or Legacy)

https://www.kernel.org/releases.html shows that 6.1 and 5.15 are the 2 most recent Long Term Support versions .

Archlinux repos have 6.1 as linux-lts , for 5.15 you need to build the kernel from the aur , see https://aur.archlinux.org/packages/linux-lts515 .

At some point during installation the installer 'Archfi'

We don't consider installations with archfi to be running archlinux, see https://bbs.archlinux.org/misc.php?action=rules .

Unless you follow the officlal installation guide * , you'll have to look for help on whatever support channels archfi has .

* although it's disapproved of by many (including me) there is an alternative method archinstall  that is supported on this forum.

No worries for archfi I am not asking help on this part, I tried archinstall but find it less user friendly than archfi and the manual installation process takes way too long for my needs

I'll figure out how to build the older kernel. What bother's me though is that newer kernel are not working and I will be stuck with an unsupported kernel !

I guess we can tag this thread as SOLVED somehow

What bother's me though is that newer kernel are not working and I will be stuck with an unsupported kernel !

It will be supported by kernel devs and get updates until oct 2026, possibly longer.  .

By that time the motherboard will be older then 12 years , maybe you can start planning for a replacement ?
