[Solved]Hdmi Vs mini Display port

I have been using a display port ---> mini display port cable to connect the 4K monitor for many years.

GNOME is blazing fast (nvidia rtx)

I had some problems shutting down/powesafe mode(monitor dead) so I tried with a Hdmi cable input - - - > Hdmi output.

With this cable Gnome Shell goes more jerky but the colors are incredibly sharp (more than before) and maximum 30hz can be set.

I tried to investigate and there are many cables and versions of either.

I don't understand if I should get a more modern hdmi cable hope Gnome is as smooth as before or a new advanced display port (I think mine is defective) .

Re: [Solved]Hdmi Vs mini Display port

4k @60Hz needs HDMI 2.0 or higher on all devices and an "HDMI Premium High Speed" or "HDMI Ultra High Speed" graded cable (*sigh* - yes, that bullshit is the official grading and should be printed onto the cable somewhere…)

If it's only "HDMI High Speed" that's not high enough.

Re: [Solved]Hdmi Vs mini Display port

Thanks for reply.
You would then suggest me hdmi 2.0 (in fact I tried an old cable) and not to use display port mini 1.4 improved To replace the old I think defective?

DP is usually less trobulesome, so if you think this is just an issue w/ the DP cable, I'd rather replace that (as you'd apparently need a new HDMI cable as well anyway)

Re: [Solved]Hdmi Vs mini Display port

What impressed me most is the better definition in hdmi (very exciting the photos come to life now) but ive the impressioni that GPU make an effort and everything goes jerky.

I tried a "high speed hdmi"cableof of my soundbar but nothing changed.
Perfection would be to have the Gnome responsiveness of before DP with the definition of hdmi that I tried.

I believe I will order both types of cable and make the amazon return of the worst..

I have the impression that in all these years I have not taken advantage of my monitor 100%

Re: [Solved]Hdmi Vs mini Display port

I'm not sure what you're talking about - it's both digital connections and wide gamut support is close to non-existent on linux.
You might have played w/ the output specific settings in nvidia-settings (dithering, depth, digital vibrance or gamma correction) or the adapter might have downscaled the signal or the output simply behaves different on 30Hz and 60Hz, but you're not supposed to get more "incredibly sharp" colors (whatever that might mean) w/ either or the other.

Did you try the DP adapter at 30Hz to rule out that it's the monitor?

Re: [Solved]Hdmi Vs mini Display port

My model is a Dell P2415Q.
I found this discussion

https://www.dell.com/community/Monitors … -p/7686252

where it says that hdmi 2.0 60hz didn't exist when the monitor was released and that 60hz is only achieved with DP.

However, this is the procedure:
https://www.dell.com/support/kbdoc/en-i … rt-4k-x-2k
to obtain 60 hz ho HDMI
also on 2016 models it allows you to have 60 Hz

I followed it and it works with the old cable.  Now I can dial 60Hz and it's as snappy as before.

Among other things, I discovered that I also have two DP inputs in addition to the mini DP I used before (perhaps to use the cable from my old monitor) and I could indulge myself in spending the same 12 euros for a latest generation DP.

The problem was 30Hz

Edit:fixed with new Display port cable.
