[SOLVED] External monitor (HDMI to USB-C) is not detected

Hi,

my laptop usually connects to two external monitors. One via HDMI and one via USB-C (thunderbolt?). The second one is not detected anymore since a few days.

Downgrade of kernel or nvidia drivers via

pacman -U nvidia-dkms-525.89.02-2-x86_64.pkg.tar.zst nvidia-settings-525.89.02-1-x86_64.pkg.tar.zst nvidia-utils-525.89.02-2-x86_64.pkg.tar.zst libxnvctrl-525.89.02-1-x86_64.pkg.tar.zst

did not help.

Re: [SOLVED] External monitor (HDMI to USB-C) is not detected

The second one is not detected anymore since a few days.

Did this happen after a pacman -Syu ? If yes, post /var/log/pacman.log from that update.

Your i7-11800H processor should have an integrated intel gpu, but the inxi output doesn't show it at all.
Did you disable the iGPU in firmware ?

Please post full lspci -k output as well as a fresh xorg log  .

Disliking systemd intensely, but not satisfied with alternatives so focusing on taming systemd.

clean chroot building not flexible enough ?
Try clean chroot manager by graysky

Re: [SOLVED] External monitor (HDMI to USB-C) is not detected

Probably after a pacman -Syu, yes. But unfortunately don't know the exact time/reboot anymore. But will look through some packages although I tried the most obvious ones already imo.

And yes, I disabled the integrated intel GPU some time ago in BIOS to prevent more headache.

Re: [SOLVED] External monitor (HDMI to USB-C) is not detected

Both outputs match a system with only a discrete nvidia card, so disabling the integrated gpu has worked .

The DELL U2715H is probably an external HDMI monitor and AU Optronics your laptop screen ?

What are you using to connect the other monitor to the laptop ?

Disliking systemd intensely, but not satisfied with alternatives so focusing on taming systemd.

clean chroot building not flexible enough ?
Try clean chroot manager by graysky

Re: [SOLVED] External monitor (HDMI to USB-C) is not detected

One via HDMI and one via USB-C (thunderbolt?). The second one is not detected anymore since a few days.

Likely because of

And yes, I disabled the integrated intel GPU some time ago in BIOS to prevent more headache.

since there're only intel USB hubs and the output being wired there.
=> Try to reactivate the IGP and if that fixes it (implying the IGP is required), elaborate on the other headaches.

Re: [SOLVED] External monitor (HDMI to USB-C) is not detected

Well, the IGP was deactivated a long time before and the monitors did work.
For testing I just set the BIOS setting from "discrete" to "hybrid" again but e.g. xrandr does still not show the external monitor.

@Lone_Wolf:
Yes, the U2715H is another external monitor which is connected with HDMI and AU Optronics is indeed the laptop screen.
I'm using this cable to connect the Monitor (HDMI) to the laptop (USB-C).

Re: [SOLVED] External monitor (HDMI to USB-C) is not detected

Since downgrading the kernel had no impact, did you try
a) the cable & monitor attached to a different device
b) a differet usb port (does the current one have a small displayport logo next to it?)
c) a completely different software stack (aka "live distro", grml, knoppix or the likes)

Re: [SOLVED] External monitor (HDMI to USB-C) is not detected

a) Just tried with another laptop: monitor + cable worked and were instantly recognized (not up-to-date arch @ T580)
b) Tried it at both USB-C ports shown - also worked before at them
c) Used MX Linux live distro, same behavior as with arch - monitor is not detected

Maybe those lines in dmesg are interesting?

$ dmesg | rg -i usb
...

Re: [SOLVED] External monitor (HDMI to USB-C) is not detected

Belated thanks for your ideas. Just wanted to let you know the issue resolved itself. I think it was an update of the intel microcode package.
