Not waking from Sleep

I am having trouble with what I believe is waking from a sleep state.   The symptoms are that the PC is not driving the display and when I move the mouse or tap a key, nothing changes.  However, if I briefly press the power button it suspends and, after that it successfully wakes again.

There is nothing in the system journal that gives me any clue.  Here is an extract:

15:38 seems to be the last thing to happen before I tried waking it up for the first time.  16:15 is obviously when I pressed the power button.  From that log it looks like the kernel is not even aware of the sleeping - perhaps it is a BIOS/APCI thing?

The machine is a Lenovo Thinkstation M700 with an i7-6700 (not the original processsor) though it does exactly the same with an i5-6400 which I think is the original.  The BIOS set-up doesn't have a lot of options but it does have one about, IIRC, C-states.  I can't look as I write this as I am typing on the machine in question but I will check it out.

Re: Not waking from Sleep

What Desktop Environment / Window Manager are you using?
How are you entering what you think is a sleep state?   What happens with systemctl suspend from a terminal to put it to sleep?

Running GNOME 44.  I have not done anything specifically to cause what I think it a case of going to sleep, except not use it for an hour or so.

I will try the systemctl suspend and report back.  In the meantime I checked the BIOS settings and have the following:

C1E Support [Enabled]
C State Support [C1 C3 C6 C7]

Re: Not waking from Sleep

Ok, systemctl suspend worked.  Either this is a deeper sleep than the one the system had tried to initiate, or there is something else going on.  When the system appeared to have gone to sleep and would not wake, the power LED was on.  After executeing systemctl suspend the power light was flashing which was also what started to happen when I briefly pressed the power button when the system didn't seem to be able to wake up.  Here is the log from the 'systemctl suspend'.

Re: Not waking from Sleep

Ok, another clue - the machine had got into this state again this morning - switching to it with the KVM switch and moving the mouse or tapping keys did not cause anything to appear on screen and the monitor went to sleep, the power light was steady but I noticed the disk activity light came on briefly.  Switching back to another machine I was able to ssh into the "sleeping" one with no apparent delay.  After that, switching back to it with the KVM switch and the lock screen appears as expected!

The last log message before this is:

Then nothing in the log from trying to get the lock screen to appear by moving the mouse/tapping the keyboard the first time.  The SSH session is logged:

Re: Not waking from Sleep

I'd be curious what would happen with a dedicated monitor, keyboard and mouse avoiding the KVM switch.

I was starting to think the same way.  I don't think is is a sleep issue at all.  If I leave it as the currently selected machine, even though the screensaver engages, the screen comes back on as soon as the mouse is moved even if it has been left a while.

I did have success on one occasion after it has got stuck with the blank screen by unplugging the display port cable and plugging it back in again, though this doesn't seem to always work.  What I suspect is happening is that something in the graphics hardware notices the display port has been disconnected and transfers to using the VGA port which is not connected to anything, then fails to transfer back again.

There is a BIOS setting for which port to use which is currently set to auto so I will explore that next.
