Re: [SOLVED] Can't get GPU to use nvidia driver

I reinstalled the beta drivers to try and run x. The system crashes when I run startx. I can't ctrl+alt+F2, it really freezes (like when booting to sddm). Maybe it's the same crash?

Here is the last output of the terminal before freezing.

It reboots fine to multi-user.

Re: [SOLVED] Can't get GPU to use nvidia driver

It was Tuesday night or Wednesday morning that I ran yay to upgrade the kernel (and nvidia?) and I started having this freeze during boot.

What if you roll back the update, https://wiki.archlinux.org/title/Arch_L … cific_date

Re: [SOLVED] Can't get GPU to use nvidia driver

I can't because I thought I had done something wrong during the installation and that I was the cause of the crash. I must have done 15 installs from scratch between Tuesday and today, re-doing the partition table, formatting the partitions and everything.

---

Edit: sorry you mean downloading with pacman -U from the archive the versions that were available on Tuesday. I tried it but without success (in the sense that on Wednesday I tried it but it kept crashing. I described what I tried in this thread). And now I can't downgrade the packages because of dependencies that can't be resolved.

Re: [SOLVED] Can't get GPU to use nvidia driver

Yes you can, see the linked article. You can tell pacman to use the pacakge database of a specific date.
But you can also try some other OS (that ships the nvidia drivers) just to rule out a hardware issue.

Re: [SOLVED] Can't get GPU to use nvidia driver

I might try a Ubuntu and a Windows install.

The x log doesn't contain any clue?

Re: [SOLVED] Can't get GPU to use nvidia driver

So yeah I can install Ubuntu using the installation media but it won't boot afterwards. Except I can't see any log so I don't know what's going on. I might try windows too.

---

Edit: it boots if I disable the nvidia GPU on the bios.

Re: [SOLVED] Can't get GPU to use nvidia driver

So now that I know that I can disable the dedicated GPU in the bios, it's easier to test stuff. Nvidia drivers are always installed and I disable the GPU when I want to boot to KDE.

In this last test, I had mkinitcpio.conf without any modules and without the kms hook, latest linux, linux-headers and nvidia-dkms.

With the GPU enabled it still freezes during the boot, but I didn't reboot immediately after the freeze to see what happened. It turns out that after 3 minutes more or less, the screen un-froze and the cursor blank for approx 30s, and then it froze for good.

Here is the journal from that freeze. Maybe it has more information?

"Internal micro-controller halt" - hardware, driver or thermal issue.
Since we've tried several kernels and nvidia drivers and ubuntu, you can also try windows but it smells like the GPU fried. a hardware issue.

Search for "badfbadf(badfbadf)" - it's prevalent for the 4090 (you've an 4050) - can you downclock the GPU in the BIOS?

Edit: the offender seems Hardware Accelerated GPU Scheduling (HAGS) but idk. whether and how you can disable it on the linux driver

Re: [SOLVED] Can't get GPU to use nvidia driver

I tried everything on windows too, without success. The OS tried to boot with the GPU enables but fails and disables it by itself to succeed the boot.

I'll be contacting the manufacturer to return the laptop.

I want to thank you all for the time invested in this investigation, for your patience, didactic and for your dedication to the community.

I sure learned a hell lot from all of this and I hope I can help someone one day.
