USB Display with nvidia GPU and AMD cpu

Hi all,

I am sorry if this has been asked somewhere else, I am not able to find a solution.

I have AMD CPU without any graphics - 5900x.
I have a minimal nvidia GPU - GT 710. ( pascal / drivers 470 proprietary).

I can directly connect GPU to monitor with hdmi.

But I want to connect it via a USB (usb - C using mhl display) and it does not seem to work directly. I am able to connect my android phone or windows laptop seamlessly though.

I want this functionality to be able to build some docking station. Daisy chain output to another monitor and connect usb devices. So far I haven't found any luck.

It could be only CPUs with internal GPU allow this (which would complicate things for me), or it could be something that we can fix. Maybe some routing config.

Re: USB Display with nvidia GPU and AMD cpu

Did some searching and it seems that MHL can use "MHL Alternate Mode" over a usb-c connection if the port supports MHL .

https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/USB-C#Alt … ifications shows the logos used for usb-c alternate modes . Does your motherboard have MHL capable ports ?

Disliking systemd intensely, but not satisfied with alternatives so focusing on taming systemd.

clean chroot building not flexible enough ?
Try clean chroot manager by graysky

Re: USB Display with nvidia GPU and AMD cpu

There is generally no way to internally connect a dedicated GPU to a usb-c port on the mainpoard. Some few graphics cards have an internal DP-Port for that purpose and some mainboards may have a DP input or provide support for an additional card, for example asrock: https://www.asrock.com/mb/spec/product. … AIC%20R2.0

If you have another mainboard and dedicated GPU that does not have its own USB-C port, then you'll need a multiplexer box or card, some examples are listed here:

Edit: The UPA2015 is newer than the UPA2018, by the way. It is a newly released card that is not available through any retailer I know of yet.

Thanks, in the manual I don't see anything about these. All I can see is that I am using a USB 3.2 Gen 2 10 Gbps port. Manual: https://download.msi.com/archive/mnu_ex … MORTAR.pdf

Ah, I feared this, Thanks a lot for sharing, very helpful. Trying to find a cheap solution available in my country.

I am regretting a bit about buying a CPU without an internal GPU. I rarely see any CPU review posted online mention this problem.

@progandy I wanted to confirm that even integrated AMD cpu's will not work, right? Was going through: https://www.reddit.com/r/Amd/comments/p … c_monitor/

Re: USB Display with nvidia GPU and AMD cpu

Newer AMD APUs with USB4 and a matching mainboard will probably support it, but with older models you'll have to find the rare mainboards with thunderbolt 3 (might or might not need an internal DP-cable) or the same multiplexer cards I already mentioned.

Thanks, it is sad it needs USB4 though, and not USB3.2 like most intel boards.
