Wifi stopped working

I've got my PC running for about 2 years now with arch. At some moment the WiFi stopped working and I havent had the time to look into it so I plugged in a ethernet cable. Today I had some time, but I still can't figure out whats going on.

When I check the NetworkManager cli, it gives me the following output:

# nmcli
wlan0: disconnected
        "Broadcom and subsidiaries BCM4360"
wifi (wl), 74:C6:3B:00:65:1B, hw, mtu 1500

rfkill also shows unblocked.

1: phy0: Wireless LAN
	Soft blocked: no
	Hard blocked: no

Result of lspci

lspci -vnn -d 14e4:
Network controller [0280]: Broadcom Inc. and subsidiaries BCM4360 802.11ac Wireless Network Adapter [14e4:43a0] (rev 03)
Subsystem: ASUSTeK Computer Inc. BCM4360 802.11ac Wireless Network Adapter [1043:8659]
Flags: bus master, fast devsel, latency 0, IRQ 19, NUMA node 0
	Memory at fb400000 (64-bit, non-prefetchable) [size=32K]
	Memory at fb200000 (64-bit, non-prefetchable) [size=2M]
	Capabilities: <access denied>
	Kernel driver in use: wl
	Kernel modules: bcma, wl

My bluetooth runs over the some 'antenna' and that works fine. I have no idea what "disconnected" in this case should mean, or how to go about to fix this. Anyone that can help please?

Re: Wifi stopped working

Please post your complete system journal for a boot covering the failure eg.

sudo journalctl -b | curl -F 'f:1=<-' ix.io

for the current boot.

Re: Wifi stopped working

What are the output of ls /etc/systemd/system   ?
Does sudo iw wlan0 scan show anything meaningful (like the SSIDs surrounding you?)

Do you use Proton VPN, if so you should be able to find the fix in this forum or everyone's best friend Google. '

I don't have iw installed, I did try IWD and it just says "disconnected" and can't find any SSIDs.

Jun 09 15:07:48 desktop ntfs-3g[411]: Mounted /dev/sdb2 (Read-Write, label "Storage", NTFS 3.1)

In case there's a parallel windows installation, see the 3rd link below. Mandatory.
Disable it (it's NOT the BIOS setting!) and reboot windows and linux twice for voodo reasons.

Jun 09 15:07:49 desktop vmnetBridge[528]: Bridge process created.

Disable vmware, docker and containerd - does the issue remain w/o those?
(Notably the vmware bridge seems to act up and we need to know whether this is a userspace or kernel issue)

Re: Wifi stopped working

I hadn't booted into windows for months, but went in to confirm that hybernation and fast start were disabled.

Kicked vmware from the system, since I wasn't using it anymore anyway. Disabled docker and containerd, ran updates, rebooted, but still no luck.

But there's no indication that the otherwise very scan-happy NM has already triggered a scan.

If you stop NM, can you connect w/ wifi-menu from the netctl package or manually, https://wiki.archlinux.org/title/Wpa_su … passphrase / https://wiki.archlinux.org/title/Iwd#Co … _a_network or scan  w/ iw, https://wiki.archlinux.org/title/Networ … ireless#iw ?

Re: Wifi stopped working

I did a test before by stopping NM and doing a manual scan trough iwd ( https://wiki.archlinux.org/title/Iwd#Co … _a_network ), but it doesnt scan, doesnt show any SSIDs and says wifi status is "disconnected".

thnx for the heads up on the ntfs, I'll look into that.

Re: Wifi stopped working

Try the LTS kernel and the behavior on some live distro (the install iso, grml, ubuntu…) and double, triple and quadruple check on the fast-start situation (I believe you, but this is a very common symptom) and do a cold reboot (where you shut the system down until it powers off) from windows and linux (the voodoo thing…)

Re: Wifi stopped working

Hi Seth,

Sorry for getting back to you so late. I've been quite busy and haven't been able to create a new live distro or switch to the LTS kernel. I did do another quick boot into Windows though and noticed that the WiFi there also isn't picking up any SSID's, so I'm thinking that its most probably something about the wifi on the mobo that's busted?

Re: Wifi stopped working

My bluetooth runs over the some 'antenna' and that works fine.

Does that work under windows as well?
Are there any 2.4 GHz networks in your range?

Did you try to reset the BIOS?

Re: Wifi stopped working

Yea, Bluetooth works fine under windows. There are multiple 2.4 and 5ghz networks that I can see trough my phone.

This is the board i'm running with

Re: Wifi stopped working

It uses a tri-cabled external antenna.
I'd look there…

If you setup your phone as an AP (hotspot) and get it *very* close to the wifi chip (in doubt, open the case) or antenna slots, can you scan for that?
