Latest kernel update (11-06-2023) broke wifi on thinkpad T450s

Ran pacman -Syu about an hour ago (around 10pm BST), rebooted to find iwgtk not in systray and iwd.service failed to start. logs showed no indication of fault, just "failed with result 'exit code'". Couldn't be manually started either.

On a hunch checked kernel package was now linux-6.3.7.arch1-1, rolled back to 6.3.6 and wifi working again.

lspci -k output after rolling back:

03:00.0 Network controller: Intel Corporation Wireless 7265 (rev 59)
Subsystem: Intel Corporation Dual Band Wireless-AC 7265 [Stone Peak 2 AC]
	Kernel driver in use: iwlwifi
	Kernel modules: iwlwifi

This laptop has a broken ethernet connector, so you can imagine this was rather unpleasant.

What surprises me is that it's definately caused by linux-6.3.7.arch1-1 package, and definately cured by rolling back to 6.3.6, (I've repeatedly done it) but both versions identify themselves as 6.3.6 in the log.

Which means that you're not updating the kernel that's actually getting booted. Usually this happens when you don't have the /boot partition mounted when you update, but it can happen if it is mounted but your bootloader is configured to load the kernel from somewhere else.

Re: Latest kernel update (11-06-2023) broke wifi on thinkpad T450s

I just checked that, it seems that my efi boot partition was missing from fstab (some oddity that must've happened during install process), so once booted, /boot was just a folder on my root partition. However the actual efi boot partition does have grub and so living on it.

Anyway, I don't understand how upgrading the kernel package breaks wifi if it's not actually updating the booted kernel.

Re: Latest kernel update (11-06-2023) broke wifi on thinkpad T450s

Because when you update, the modules for the old kernel no longer exist.
