"input not supported" error with latest proprietary nvidia drivers

Hello everyone!

I have installed the latest nvidia drivers (dkms) and I am using the latest linux-zen, evertime I start X, I get a "input not supprted" message on my monitor
I have fallowed https://wiki.archlinux.org/title/NVIDIA and https://wiki.archlinux.org/title/NVIDIA#Troubleshooting to the letter and I really dont know where to go
from here. I should also mention that I have tried this on a 2060 super and 3060 ti, and neither work.

Thanks for the help!

Re: "input not supported" error with latest proprietary nvidia drivers

That server ran on the modesetting driver on top of nouveau - NOT using the proprietary nvidia driver and on 1920x1080 (and likely 60Hz)
I assume your nvidia installation failed and you're not getting any signal when (failing) starting the display server?

=> Boot the multi-user.target (2nd link below) and as loqs asked, post your complete system journal for the boot:

sudo journalctl -b | curl -F 'f:1=<-' ix.io

Re: "input not supported" error with latest proprietary nvidia drivers

That log is from a different boot. Why did you add nomodset to the kernel command line? What else did you change?

Re: "input not supported" error with latest proprietary nvidia drivers

Because you're only booting the multi-user.target.

systemctl start graphical.target

and, since you apparently "forgot" about it, 2nd link below on how to change them.

Re: "input not supported" error with latest proprietary nvidia drivers

The server starts correctly with the nvidia driver but proceeds to die because it gets no job to run/or the designated job dies immediately. What exactly are you trying to run in the graphical target and what's the journalctl -b from such an attempt?

Re: "input not supported" error with latest proprietary nvidia drivers

That server ran successfully for ~8 seconds on the proprietary nvidia driver w/ 1920x1080 on an "Acer SB220Q"
Do you still get the "input not supprted" message?
If so, while the X11 server is running, switch to a different VT and run

DISPLAY=:0 xrandr -q | curl -F 'f:1=<-' ix.io

and post the link you get in return.

@V1del, I assume he just killed it if there's a invalid signal at the output, 8 seconds is too long for a broken xinitrc.

Re: "input not supported" error with latest proprietary nvidia drivers

im actually unable to switch to a another vt while the "input not supportet" is running, I cant even really kill the X server, I just have to restart my computer, killing the X server (with mod-shift-q because of my dwm keybinding) doesnt do anything.

Re: "input not supported" error with latest proprietary nvidia drivers

Can you ssh into the system?

1. Post your xinitrc
2. add "xrandr -q > ~/xrandr.dump" to your xinitrc and maybe don't then "exec dwm" but let the server terminate immediately (to hopefully return to a functional console)
3. don't enable/start the graphical.target, just run startx/xinit

What is your graphical.target and how do you usually start X11? Some entry in $SHELL_profile? Post that as well.

What happens for "xrandr --output HDMI-0 --rate 60; exec dwm"?
Do you have a second monitor or cable at hand (especially cable…)?

xrandr --output HDMI-0 --mode 1024x768 --rate 60

OK! manually specifying the resoultion works, i tried with 1920x1080 and it worked too, any idea what might be causing this?

Re: "input not supported" error with latest proprietary nvidia drivers

Does "xrandr --output HDMI-0 --mode 1920x1080 --rate 75" work?
The monitor edid lists that as 1srt detailed timing and it's used by default and in your xrandr output.
I'd have thought that just altering the rate would be enough, but apparently not?
Does the windows system run the monitor at 75Hz (check the monitor OSD, not windows)?

You can alternatively set that mode w/ nvidias metamode option (the PreferredMode stuff is ignored by the driver) in the "Screen" section hmm

Re: "input not supported" error with latest proprietary nvidia drivers

these monitors run at 60Hz, setting it at 1920x1080 and a rate of 60 works for Xorg, so thats all good

running at 75Hz gives me the same "input not supported" message,

the only weird part is that whenever i kill the Xsession, and subsequently go back to tty, then it decides not to work, but its better than before
