[solved] zen (and other variant) + lts kernel packages?

hi Arch friends!

just wondering if Arch has ever considered making flavoured versions of the LTS releases? on my system, the Zen kernel is significantly more performant for gaming and desktop usage, but I'm running ZFS root, so I need the LTS kernels because using the latest releases often results in an unbootable system until openzfs updates their code to work with the latest kernels.

Since LTS generally just tracks older, more stable kernel versions, I think it'd be great to have LTS versions of all the variant kernels arch currently supports, so we can have the stability plus the variant features. This would likely just involve keeping the older versions around a little longer and tagging them with a metapackage or something.

thoughts?

Why I run Arch? To "BTW I run Arch" the guy one grade younger.
And to let my siblings and cousins laugh at Arsch Linux...

Re: [solved] zen (and other variant) + lts kernel packages?

so I see some individual packages for specific old versions, like 5.15, but I don't see anything that tracks the current LTS versions like the non-AUR LTS packages do. current LTS is `6.1.30-1-lts`, which works a lot better on my system than the 5.15 ones do, and I also don't want to have to constantly check AUR for new numbered release packages, I want it to just upgrade to the latest LTS as normal while keeping the Zen patches. as well, because it's not just metapackages that depend on older versions from the main repos, but apparently things that rebuild fresh from git, these kernels are unlikely to get the same amount of testing that the ones in the main arch package repo do. but since Arch currently doesn't keep old versions of kernel packages around for the variant kernels, it'd be hard to just create a metapackage in AUR that'd install the proper versions of the variants that match the LTS release version, since they've likely already been removed.

it seems like to do this properly, arch would either have to hold onto old releases for versions announced to be LTS, or we'd have to replicate all of those old releases in AUR and then have a metapackage depend on them. I'd definitely prefer the first scenario, since the second sounds like a real mess, which I assume is why we don't already see folks doing this in AUR.

Re: [solved] zen (and other variant) + lts kernel packages?

So to your update problem I see to solutions:
An AUR manager - it'll update the package automatically if you update. i recommend paru
A unofficial Mirror - gets you around compiling and you can update normally. https://wiki.archlinux.org/title/Unofficial_mirrors
Both will warn you if somebody flags the package out of date.

This will work for most kernels - note though linux-zen is based on the 5.15 lts, as the name sugests. also, almost no packages (or at least none that i know) depend on kernel versions., so you could use it
You could build yourself, though, but that's pretty messy.

some normal lts performance kernels are:
https://aur.archlinux.org/packages/linux-xanmod-lts - has some high performance patches. 6.1.35, chaotic-aur has it.
https://aur.archlinux.org/packages/linu … ltscurrent - also has performance patches, but it's on 6.1.28
both are comparable to the zen kernel.

ahh yeah, I see there's a couple that do track the current releases. so it's just Zen that's out in the cold. I'll try the clear linux one since I've heard good things, thanks!

Remember to mark it as solved - so that others can see they might find a solution here smile. thanks.

Re: [solved] zen (and other variant) + lts kernel packages?

unfortunately, I don't see how to do that. I did a search in my browser, and the only instance of the word "solve" was in your post... ?

On this BBS the thread title is part of the first post of the thread.
Edit the first post and prepend [Solved] to the title .

Disliking systemd intensely, but not satisfied with alternatives so focusing on taming systemd.

clean chroot building not flexible enough ?
