External mic detected, but not recording any sound

I have an external mic that has a 3.5mm cable, but it does not record any sound. I checked that the mic is functional by testing on my ios device.

Here are the symptoms:

1. If I do not connect anything to my laptop's 3.5mm cable slot, the internal mic wouldn't record any sound

2. If I connect my mic to the 3.5mm port, the INTERNAL mic would start working. I checked this by tapping on my mic, my laptop(which has the internal mic), and comparing the input levels between the two. It would be much louder when I tapped the laptop

3. If I connect anything other than a microphone (ex. an output-only headphone) the internal mic would still work like case 2

I verified the above symptoms using the gui pavucontrol, and I made sure to select the plugged-in microphone, when I've plugged one in. And by the internal mic working, I mean that it actually records audio and it would play fine.

I also tried to check if my system is actually recognizing the external mic correctly by running and comparing

arecord -l

outputs, when the mic is plugged in and not plugged in. The output would be identical, and I'm not sure if it's supposed to be like that. The output was like this:

I'm currently using pipewire + wireplumber for my audio. I'm not too familiar with the system though, so if anyone could offer to help, I can definitely try to provide additional information about my setup.

Try configuring e.g. /etc/modprobe.d/headsetfix.conf

options snd-hda-intel model=dell-headset-multi

and rebooting.

Thanks for replying. Sadly, your suggestion didn't seem to work

Yeah, I've been tackling this problem for the whole day, and I found This bug report, which has been stale for a long time.

So I concluded there aren't any canonical solutions to this problem.
