Can login but no desktop [SOLVED]

I'm using i3 with sddm. Last night everything was well and good but today as I log in I noticed that i3 would not load.
After trying all kind of things I figured it was something related to my default user, so I created a new user and that user was OK to log in. But of course, did not have the i3 configuration I had... so I figured that if there was some sort of corruption of the default user I could delete the user, re-create it again assign it to the same old directory and everything would be good and I would go may marry way ... but nope.
Even when I assign all the rights to the re-created user it does not work. Same problem as before.

Any ideas to troubleshoot this issue would be appreciated.

Thanks!

Re: Can login but no desktop [SOLVED]

@Trilby

Thanks for your reply.
BTW the default user is ralvez uid:1000
The test user I added was alvez just in case it helps.
I did notice that Albert fails to load in the logs but I do not think it has anything to do with the problem at hand.

Re: Can login but no desktop [SOLVED]

Don't use an nvidia-settings generated xorg configuration, since the only output seems to be connected to the nvidia chip, you're looking for https://wiki.archlinux.org/title/NVIDIA … phics_only (or disable the IGP in the BIOS) but I don't suspect that to be the cause of the immediate issue.

You're not starting i3, but i3-with-shmlog.desktop - I assume that's deliberate and consistent among tested UIDs?

The journal is useless, don't copy & paste out of the pager.

journalctl -b | curl -F 'f:1=<-' ix.io # after attempting to log into i3

and since you're using the logging service, also post the i3 log.

Re: Can login but no desktop [SOLVED]

Hi seth,

The journalctl was sent to ix.io.
Oddly enough, /var/log/i3.log does not exist?!

Let me know if there is anything else you think that may help. Many thanks.

Re: Can login but no desktop [SOLVED]

You need to post the ix.io url you got…

https://i3wm.org/docs/userguide.html

@seth,

I just noticed that the link returns "no content"... no matter how many times I copy/paste the link you posted.

I've got it, from the list of recent uploads: http://ix.io/4zhC. This doesn't look anywhere near as complete as what you tried to copy/paste earlier, though...

Re: Can login but no desktop [SOLVED]

The copypaste might just be a lot of artifacts from the pager. The posted one has

Jun 27 19:34:47 dragonfly su[75433]: (to ralvez) alvez on pts/0

So you su'd into your ralvez user from the (successful) alvez - which is likely UID 1001 and the subject of that journal.

Please post your complete system journal for the boot after failing to start i3:

sudo journalctl -b | curl -F 'f:1=<-' ix.io

Did you see the i3 debugging section?

Re: Can login but no desktop [SOLVED]

@seth,

Hi. The reason I go to ralvez via su on alvez is that as soon as I try to log in using ralvez I get locked out of my system.
It no longer responds to any other commands nor I can open a TTY to log in as ralvez.
If you have any suggestions on another way to access the system I'll be happy to try. I myself run out of tricks. wink

Re: Can login but no desktop [SOLVED]

Can you reboot the system w/ the https://wiki.archlinux.org/title/Keyboa … el_(SysRq) ?
If so, you can post the system journal of the previous boot (where you locked yourself out) w/ "… -b -1 …" instead of "-b"
An alternative approach would be to ssh into the system, lock yourself out (whatever that implies) and see whether the ssh login still responds (allowing you to live-analyze the situation)

Also post some config files for your troublesome user, notably any shell rc and xinitrc and i3 config, along this list

ls ~ralvez/.{bash,zsh,x,}{rc,_profile,_env,profile} ~ralvez/.xinitrc ~ralvez/.config/i3/config 2>/dev/null

OK. That's a great idea/s.

Re: Can login but no desktop [SOLVED]

@seth,

After reading about SysRg I decided to give it a go, but I found a show stopper already sad
My /etc/sysctl.d does not have any files. Meaning I cannot edit 50-default.conf because it is not there.

Is that expected? Or do I have to create the file?
Honestly, I expected it to be there because the instructions read: "systemd has the SysRq permissions bitmask set to 0x10 by default, which does not allow process signalling or rebooting, among other things." which implies the file should exist.

Any ideas?

Re: Can login but no desktop [SOLVED]

I have to create the file

The systemd config is in /usr/lib/sysctl.d/50-default.conf and will get shadowed by /etc/sysctl.d/50-default.conf when you add that.

I assume

 If not running interactively, don't do anything
[[ $- != *i* ]] && return

alias ls='ls --color=auto'
alias grep='grep --color=auto'
PS1='[\u@\h \W]\$ '
[alvez@dragonfly ~]$ cat zsh
cat: zsh: No such file or directory
[alvez@dragonfly ~]$ cat zshrc
cat: zshrc: No such file or directory
[alvez@dragonfly ~]$ su
Password:
[root@dragonfly alvez]# cat /home/ralvez/.bashrc

is just copypasta from your terminal and not part of the actual file?

You're sourcing a bunch of local scripts in your .bashrc and .zshrc, try to comment that.
You're also auto-executing quite some processes from the i3 config, "exec_always --no-startup-id "xrandr --output HDMI-0 --mode 1920x1080 --primary"" being the most worrysome (because of some recent threads)

I'd briefly test whether you can start an openbox session w/ your regular user, if that's the case, the problems are likely w/ the i3 config, so move that away and see whether you can now log into an i3 session w/ your regular user (to confirm it's only the i3config)
Then restore the i3config and comment every exec line (you could eg. use "#??" to indicate it's commented for this test) and see whether you can still log in.
If that's the case, only comment the xrandr one (since I worry about it the most).

Re: Can login but no desktop [SOLVED]

@seth,

Well ... this was interesting.
I commented out "exec_always --no-startup-id "xrandr --output HDMI-0 --mode 1920x1080" then I logged out and in again as the user "alvez" and boom! Same problem as the default user "ralvez".
So I un-commented the line but no joy. Something broke in such a way that now neither alvez not ralvez can log in smile

I'm getting to the point I'm beginning to feel that the best solution is to blow this machine out of the water and start clean.

I've put so much time trying to get this thing back to work.
Even with your help and ideas I'm getting to feel that this is a rescue mission from hell. smile LOL.

Re: Can login but no desktop [SOLVED]

Are the config files in #15 from the user alvez, ralvez or both?
Did editing the config file of the user "ralvez" break the login for the user "alvez"??

I'm getting to feel that this is a rescue mission from hell

We'll need a journal covering the incident?

Re: Can login but no desktop [SOLVED]

@seth,

Well ... I decided to go with my "gut feeling" and did the following:
1. move the directory ralvez (default user) to old_ralvez
2. created a new ralvez directory
3. copied the files and configs from old_ralvez to ralvez
4. rebooted the machine
5. logged as ralvez
6. system is working fine.

One thing I did notice was that the commented line "exec_always --no-startup-id "xrandr --output HDMI-0 --mode 1920x1080"  seems to be necessary. Without it the i3 bar does not show. As soon as I un-comment it works fine.

I would like to thank you for all your help but is seems that for the moment things are working again.

I'm really curious as to what caused the problem but I care more that the system is once again up and running. smile

Once again thanks for all the help.

Re: Can login but no desktop [SOLVED]

the commented line "exec_always --no-startup-id "xrandr --output HDMI-0 --mode 1920x1080"  seems to be necessary

Please post your xorg log and the output of "xrandr -q"

The solution™ sounds like the error was bound to the UID or the $HOME directory (permissions)

Re: Can login but no desktop [SOLVED]

Can't open display :0

You need to run xrandr inside an X11 session (or direct it to some running X11 session, but and X11 server is necessary)

[     5.272] (--) PCI: (0@0:2:0) 8086:3e92:1028:0871 rev 0, Mem @ 0x6000000000/16777216, 0x4000000000/268435456, I/O @ 0x00004000/64
[     5.272] (--) PCI:*(1@0:0:0) 10de:1d01:1043:85f5 rev 161, Mem @ 0x92000000/16777216, 0x80000000/268435456, 0x90000000/33554432, I/O @ 0x00003000/128, BIOS @ 0x????????/131072

You've an dual-GPU system that

[     5.265] (==) Using config file: "/etc/X11/xorg.conf"
[     5.266] (==) ServerLayout "Layout0"
[     5.266] (**) |-->Screen "Screen0" (0)
[     5.266] (**) |   |-->Monitor "Monitor0"
[     5.266] (**) |   |-->Device "Device0"
[     5.266] (**) |-->Input Device "Keyboard0"
[     5.266] (**) |-->Input Device "Mouse0"

you force to run on the nvidia chip w/ an nvidia-settings generated config file.
That's usually a recipe for disaster, but

[     5.969] (--) NVIDIA(GPU-0): Ancor Communications Inc VS248 (DFP-1): connected
[     5.969] (--) NVIDIA(GPU-0): Ancor Communications Inc VS248 (DFP-1): Internal TMDS
[     5.969] (--) NVIDIA(GPU-0): Ancor Communications Inc VS248 (DFP-1): 600.0 MHz maximum pixel clock

There's an output attached to the nvidia chip - and by the looks of it none to the intel one.
And

[     5.972] (II) NVIDIA(0): Virtual screen size determined to be 1920 x 1080

it actually defaults to 1920x1080, so the xrandr call should™ be idempotent, but maybe for the "--primary" aspect.
Is

exec_always --no-startup-id "xrandr --output HDMI-0 --primary"

sufficient?

Re: Can login but no desktop [SOLVED]

After poking some of my configs I now have a different issue but related to what we are talking.

Invalid MIT-MAGIC-COOKIE-1 key
Can't open display :0

It seems like my Xorg configs are messed up.

May be I should re-configure my xserver settings ?

Re: Can login but no desktop [SOLVED]

xauth -v list
hostnamectl

And "stat" the used authority file.

This seems to be somehow an issue w/ SDDM, https://wiki.archlinux.org/title/SDDM#Hangs_after_login
