Read-only is normal for the boot sequence.
Fsck must complete its function of system check efore the boot will finish.
If you get a statement after fsck has completed its check, hit control d and let it reboot again.

Thanks for the response.
Turns out my old IDE HD that's been collecting dust finally bit it. Sticking a sata in this machine and reinstalling solved it.
