Team Fortress 2 going into "Insecure Mode"

when I try to use the "__GL_THREADED_OPTIMIZATIONS=1 %command%" launch option, the game starts up fine, but upon trying to join any VAC-Protected server I get a message that the game is in insecure mode and doesn't allow me to join. I would usually get this kind of error when trying to use a Proton compatibility layer, but I'm not in this case. anyone have any idea why this happens?

You don't need this launch option, it is set by default in TF2's startup script (steamapps/common/Team Fortress 2/hl2.sh).
