Firefox ctrl+. shortcut causing big CPUs spike

Hey guys,
Weird issue as hell. I only noticed it due to 1Password using the combination. I initially blamed the extension but after changing shortcut issue persisted.

It seems that after hitting ctrl + . (ctrl dot shortcut) for whatever reasons my Firefox gets unresponsive for some time(usually a minute or two) and then goes back to normal operating style without any problems, no lags or whatsoever.

I've tried on fresh profile, other user both same thing.

Any ideas what this could be?

Welcome to archlinux forums

IBus seems to use that (and ctrl + semicolon) shortcut for emoji selection , see https://wiki.archlinux.org/title/IBus#Emoji_input

Is ibus installed on your system ?

Links that lead me to check ibus wiki page :

Re: Firefox ctrl+. shortcut causing big CPUs spike

No, that's good shout but unfortunately not the case sad

gsettings list-recursively | grep "<Control>":
org.gnome.desktop.wm.keybindings cycle-panels ['<Control><Alt>Escape']
org.gnome.desktop.wm.keybindings cycle-panels-backward ['<Shift><Control><Alt>Escape']
org.gnome.desktop.wm.keybindings move-to-workspace-down ['<Control><Shift><Alt>Down']
org.gnome.desktop.wm.keybindings move-to-workspace-left ['<Super><Shift>Page_Up', '<Super><Shift><Alt>Left', '<Control><Shift><Alt>Left']
org.gnome.desktop.wm.keybindings move-to-workspace-right ['<Super><Shift>Page_Down', '<Super><Shift><Alt>Right', '<Control><Shift><Alt>Right']
org.gnome.desktop.wm.keybindings move-to-workspace-up ['<Control><Shift><Alt>Up']
org.gnome.desktop.wm.keybindings switch-panels ['<Control><Alt>Tab']
org.gnome.desktop.wm.keybindings switch-panels-backward ['<Shift><Control><Alt>Tab']
org.gnome.desktop.wm.keybindings switch-to-workspace-down ['<Control><Alt>Down']
org.gnome.desktop.wm.keybindings switch-to-workspace-left ['<Super>Page_Up', '<Super><Alt>Left', '<Control><Alt>Left']
org.gnome.desktop.wm.keybindings switch-to-workspace-right ['<Super>Page_Down', '<Super><Alt>Right', '<Control><Alt>Right']
org.gnome.desktop.wm.keybindings switch-to-workspace-up ['<Control><Alt>Up']

Nothing gives the emoji. Nor ibus is installed too:
paru -Q | grep ibus
libusb 1.0.26-2
libusbmuxd 2.0.2-3

Re: Firefox ctrl+. shortcut causing big CPUs spike

It seems microsoft VSCode uses that shortcut, do you have some visual studio stuff installed ?

Does the shortcut also cause issues when used outside of firefox ?

Re: Firefox ctrl+. shortcut causing big CPUs spike

Hmm that's a good spot too. Yeah I'm using vscode and while using the ctrl+. shortcut it makes it laggy....

Just tried starting plasma with wayland, and it seems to do the same. So maybe something related to plasma?

Re: Firefox ctrl+. shortcut causing big CPUs spike

Try with a simple X window manager like openbox or twm (check their archwiki pages for details on how to start them)

Re: Firefox ctrl+. shortcut causing big CPUs spike

So not plasma related.

Can you remove VSCode (for testing) to verify if it is indeed related to the issue ?
