That "unknown" only means that it's not clear whether there's current traffic, you can use that wifi chip at this point and connect it to the AP w/ iwctl.
So see whether blacklisting "modprobe.blacklist=bcma,b43" gets you ahead. If not, try "modprobe.blacklist=bcma,b43,tg3"

SUCCESS!
Thank you for taking time to get me past this. This is what I did:
1. Boot August 2023 ArchISO
2. At grub menu enter "e"
3. Add to the end of the kernel command line: "modprobe.blacklist=bcma,b43" # I think the order of these modules is key
4. F10 to boot
5. Use iwctl to connect the wifi
