multiple soundcards

Hi all,

I plugged in an sblive value, besides the onboard intel ich5 soundcard, but udev uevents now halts on boot. It either doesnt display anything but saying it's "busy" or either it prints an error code. Something about dma_alloc_coherent. For the rest all sorts of numbers and letters. Too many to be written on paper. Henceforth only this.

So in the end the system won't boot unless I unmount the soundcard. Does anybody know what to do to circumvent this?

My mobo is an Asus p4c800-e and my pc is running the latest stable arch with stock kernel.

Re: multiple soundcards

I'm not sure how to solve your problem, but why would one need multiple sound cards? While my mobo has one built in, I disabled it in Bios to use another better pci card.

Just curious.

It is useful for some people.

Yep, that is the best choice for those who don't need two cards and troubles. For example my soundards were constatly changing order.

Re: multiple soundcards

Yeah, I was having trouble back in the day with Windows on another motherboard. Lonnnng time ago. Ever since then, I just plop in my good one and disable the on-board one.

I guess part of the reason I can't see having more than one sound card as useful is because I directly output my sound to a pretty decent sized house receiver/amplifier so, anything I need to do/control gets done on that vs on the computer. Guess most don't do that....

Re: multiple soundcards

My friend uses two sondcards for organizing music parties. One good soundcard is playing music thru the amplifier, another (integrated) sends output to headphones. So he can prelisten some tracks while not interrupting music. smile

I expected to get such a reply  8)  Well, to be honest, it isn't mandatory, and it aint of that much usability. Thing is: I just want it  wink I want to hear the skype ringtone over the speakers of my monitor and other sound through another device.

I directly output my sound to a pretty decent sized house receiver/amplifier so, anything I need to do/control gets done on that vs on the computer. Guess most don't do that....

You are right. However, it isnt much of a deal when you consider people arent interested in buying amplifiers for a computer they already spent much money on. But what I find strange is that most people have pathetic sounding 10 euro speakers for sound. Inexplicable I reckon.

I have a Musical Fidelity X-CAN v3 hung up on my soundcard and I use a MDR-V700 from Sony as headphone . 8) But my reason for multiple (currently not very audiophile but to be changed later) soundcards is stated above.

As for the problem: Ill fiddle around with some settings, perhaps I might be able to solve it, or someone as an answer.

Re: multiple soundcards

From a fellow 2-soundcard-user, a lot of my sound problems (granted, none were udev related) were solved by having "pci=bios" in my kernel parameters.

Haha, I know what you mean. I know people like that. $200 sound card using $15 speakers.  Eh. A decent sound card, a powerful receiver, top of the line home audio speakers, and a powered 100watt+ rms sub will do wonders for any audiophile. smile Not only that, but it doubles for TV/movie use as well. heh

But I'm glad you got it sorted out, sorry I wasn't much more help smile
