Is Arch Linux Color Managed?

I'm curious about color management in arch linux.

After reading a bit online I found that most browsers are color managed these days. My understanding is that, for example, if an image is tagged as sRGB but my monitor supports a larger color space than sRGB, then an sRGB image with all red (1, 0, 0) will be scaled to the smaller value which results in the same color on my monitor. Please let me know if that's incorrect.

What happens regarding color management in arch linux? Say I plot a red square with RGB values (1, 0, 0) with matplotlib in python. Will the square just be the reddest red that my screen supports? How about jpg images shown in imv (or other basic image viewers)? Does tagging images with color space information have an impact?

I did a brief test where I used matplotlib to plot a red square, then I saved the image and opened it in Firefox. To me they look the same even though my laptop monitor (a recent XPS 17) should support a much larger color space than sRGB (although it really was a very quick test and I didn't tag the image as sRGB so Firefox's color management is probably disabled for that image - I'm more interested in general information about arch's color management).

Thanks for your help!

Disliking systemd intensely, but not satisfied with alternatives so focusing on taming systemd.

Re: Is Arch Linux Color Managed?

thanks for your reply! I think it kind of helps in suggesting that there is currently no semi-automatic color management (at least for wayland which I'm using)

Re: Is Arch Linux Color Managed?

I typically run a window manager only (currently i3 or fvwm3) and colord+xiccd works well for X. I have profiled and calibrated several monitors for photography. I've never tried colour management on Wayland. I think unless you're on KDE or GNOME it's not possible on Wayland (yet).

Re: Is Arch Linux Color Managed?

The colormgr command mentioned in the wayland section of that page comes with the colord package.

The outlined method should work for all supported applications, there just won't be any userspace tools for it unless your wayland compositor provides them.
This can make switching different ICC profiles cumbersome.
