[SOLVED] issues with web browsers

I have an issue with this machine where a number of applications are crashing within seconds of standing up.

The issue is with only this machine. I have a desktop and another laptop with the same configuration and no issues.

$uname -r
6.4.7-arch1-3

$ brave --version
Brave Browser 115.1.56.20

$ chromium --version
Chromium 115.0.5790.170 Arch Linux

$ edge --version
Microsoft Edge 115.0.1901.188

# pacman -S vivaldi
warning: vivaldi-6.1.3035.257-1 is up to date

With the exception of vivaldi which is pacman direct, these are all newly built from aur.

In this section below I am calling each application from the command line to capture the error output.
Below that I include what could be the stack trace from the journal.

Re: [SOLVED] issues with web browsers

They all go down deeeeeeep in the private stack and ultimately realpath()

strace -f -o /tmp/chromium.strace chromium

The strace should tell what file they're trying to resolve there. I suspect some cyclic symlinks at play.

This is a huge file. I tried putting it to pastebin but that didn't go so well. The web page is still spinning five minutes after trying so... I could paste to some other web space?

Anyway, with the help of ChatGPT (my shame)  I came up with a python parser which shows a large number of -1 Returns, many for readlink calls.

The targets of the readlinks: some don't exist, some do exist.

It *looks like to my little eye* that the readlink error is reported for every directory up from the leaf target. Is that so? Or is there something wrong with each directory node.

Or perhaps the error is in the targeted memory space?

Anyway I'm obviously out of my depth.

Please advise.

How "huge"?
I guess you could use a google drive, but in doubt just tail the last 20000 lines into 0x0.st

tail -20000 /tmp/chromium.strace | curl -F 'file=@-' 0x0.st

Looks like it's your cursor theme?
Move  /home/stephen/.icons/default away ("not.default" should do)

Then see https://bbs.archlinux.org/viewtopic.php … 1#p2082761

Re: [SOLVED] issues with web browsers

Are you using / trying to use PSD with all of these browsers?  My money would be on that as the cause (edit: if the icons are not it).

Indeed! That was the fix.

Thanks.
