Re: What after base install ???

If u want kde u could try pacman -Stu kde or   pacman -Stu gnome and u would have gnome wink
Remember to edit .xinitrc after and add startkde or gnome-session...

Re: What after base install ???

Thanks for your reply ,

Is it "pacman -Stu [package]", because option "t" is not
a valid option ?

Thanks.

Re: What after base install ???

The t is probably a typo...

To upgrade all your packages to the latest greatest, do a:

pacman -Syu (which is same as "pacman --sync --refresh --sysupgrade")

To install kde, do a:

pacman -S kde (make sure you have just done the refresh, or that should be "pacman -Sy kde")

It'll tell you kde is a group and ask you if you want to install all from that group. After installing, as Xpop said, edit ~/.xinit to start the window manager you want when you run "startx".

Re: What after base install ???

Yeah, sorry, it's ~/.xinitrc.

XFce command is "exec startxfce4". I found out by looking into "/etc/X11/sessions/xfce4.desktop", which mentions the command.

Re: What after base install ???

Hey Bjorn

I could not find that file but, something fishy caught my eyes.
I noticed that hyphen in the file name and in unix or linux this the sign
of your home directory. So it ring a bell , i did not create a new
user . All the time i was using the root user.

What i did is create a new user with adduser. (ex:toto)
Do a cd /home/toto
ls -a
and there it is  .xiinitrc
vi ./xinitrc
replace whatever was there to exec startxfce4
startx

AND IT WORKS !!!!  big_smile  big_smile  big_smile

Thank you guys !!!!!

Now my next step is to install GDM
I have allready pacman -S gdm and everything went ok.
What is my next step so that all link together when i start the computer.

Yahou this is SUPER !!!

Re: What after base install ???

Right, I totally forgot first thing is to create a new user. Anyway, you should have been told that in the manual I think. smile

About the gdm, I was just chatting with Kaleph and he told me to just add "gdm" to the DAEMONS list in /etc/rc.conf. There should be a script called "gdm" in /etc/rc.d/. The DAEMONS list is used for a lot of stuf that you want to start on boot and stop on shutdown. You should probably add it to the end, because order matters.
