[SOLVED] Weird glitches for some applications (e.g. Chromium)

Since today (presumably after a pacman -Syu) I have the following problem: Some windows (e.g. Chromium or the plot windows of Octave) look like this: https://imgur.com/a/BDTiqzx

What could this be caused by? I'm using i3-git from the AUR.

Since this might be caused by some updated package, I checked the packages I updated today but neither Chromium nor Octave is among them. The full list is

Do you also use a compositing manager?

Fixed it by removing xf86-video-intel and xf86-video-vesa. No idea why that fixed it though.

Because xf86-video-intel is epically broken and has been for years now. I saw this thread yesterday and that was my first thought - but I figured I'd wait to see the xorg.log to confirm that xf86-video-intel was the problem.
