syndaemon stops working after a bit

syndaemon stops working after about 30 seconds or so.  I can watch it still working with `syndaemon -v`, and at first the Enable and Disable messages correspond to the touchpad stopping and starting.  But then it just stops influencing the touchpad entirely despite printing Enable and Disable.  Sometimes the touchpad gets locked in the off state, synclient still works at this point to turn it back on:

synclient TouchpadOff=0

But why is syndaemon failing?
