Playing HDR videos in VLC

I have a 4k video in HDR10 format. I'm using VLC 3.0.18 in Xorg (XFCE4) to play it. Everything is OK, but the picture is very dark. On the other hand, non-HDR videos look OK.

As per this article Xorg does not support HDR.

Is there a way to watch HDR10 videos on my system? For example, to tell VLC to "downsample" color/brightness so that it will be suitable for my display?

Second this. While it is true Xorg/Linux does not support HDR yet, with mpv you can tone map HDR to SDR and get a pretty good picture.
