Lenovo Y700 - No internet connection on ethernet port

Problem

Hey everyone!

I installed Arch Linux on my laptop back in July, 2021. Both wired connection & wireless connection worked.

Back in June 2022, I noticed that the wired connection stopped working. Wireless connection worked fine (I am posting this from wireless connection).

No updates from June 2022 to today resolved this problem.

What I tried

Replacing r8169 driver with r8168 driver and blacklisting r8169 driver per Arch wiki
Downloading and loading an older driver using

None of these worked. Here are some of the "relevant" outputs:

Really, this is not flippant.
Plug the Ethernet cable in? The port is showing no carrier, What kind of cable are you using? What is it connected to on the other end? Do other things work when attached to that port? Does the cable work with other systems?

Post the entire, unfiltered, journal - but that looks like the cable is loose.
Sometimes the latch protection collides with the notbook case, the plug is supposed to snap in and sit tight in the slot. No wiggling forth and back possible.

I apologize since I should've communicated that I was the one to manually disconnect my laptop from wireless connection. I assumed (wrongly) that it might help with the wired connection.

I am using an UTP CAT.5E 100MHz cable.

It is connected to a switch. I also tried using connecting the same cable directly into the router. It didn't help.

Yes and yes. I've tested a desktop PC with Windows 10 and a different desktop PC with Arch Linux (network card on that system is different than the network card in my laptop). On both PCs I tried the exact port on the switch, different ports on the switch and different ports on the router. They worked fine.

I heard a click when I plugged the cable. It can't move back and forth nor can I unplug it without pressing the locking clip.
However, there is enough wiggle room for the cable to move around while being plugged (if this makes sense) though I'd say the same amount of wiggle room is available when I plug the cable in PCs mentioned above.

Does that pattern continue?

It's not clear to me from your explanations, but did you try the same cable w/ other systems or a different cable w/ this one?
Cause that pattern is w/ 99.8% chance the cable.

Yes it does.

I tried the same cable with other systems and they work fine.

I tried one different cable with this system and it didn't work. Today I tried a completely different cable (third one) with this system. It works when the system is connected directly to the router with the third cable.
It doesn't work if this third cable connects system to switch.

This combination works on r8168 driver, but not on r8169 driver.

Do you think it is plausible that there is a some kind of physical damage to the laptop's ethernet port?

Boot some live distro, eg. grml or knoppix.
If the NIC shows the same symptoms on a different SW stack, it's more likely a HW issue and if you can rule out the cable, chances are that the NIC took a hit.

I tried this on a live distro. The same problem occurs with same timeout issue in journal. I think it is safe to conclude that this is a HW issue.
