Black screen after login if using over 60 hz on the monitor

My new monitor Gigabyte M32UC behaves strangely. I am using a Desktop PC with GNOME on Xorg and Nvidia drivers 535.104.05 with RTX 4090 GPU.

Problem:
It works normally on the login screen but displays only black screen after logging in. This only happens if the refresh rate is set to 100, 120 or 144 Hz, but not on 60 Hz (default).
When it gets black, I can make it to work again by locking and unlocking the system or unplugging and plugging the monitor cable.
It seems to me like there's 60 Hz refresh rate on the login screen and then, after logging in, system tries to set the display to 144 Hz and fails.

* The same behavior when using different DP cable
* It works ok on Windows
* I actually have 2 pieces of M32UC. When I connect them both, the issue happens only to one of them
* It always happens to the M32UC that is connected to the rightmost DP in the GPU, tried multiple combinations
* When the screen is black, I can still control its brightness using DDC/CI

Does anybody have any suggestions? What troubleshooting steps should I do next?

Re: Black screen after login if using over 60 hz on the monitor

When it gets black, I can make it to work again by locking and unlocking the system or unplugging and plugging the monitor cable.

What's the xrandr output afterwards?

Please post your Xorg log, https://wiki.archlinux.org/title/Xorg#General

It works ok on Windows

Likely unrelated, but 3rd link below. Mandatory.
Disable it (it's NOT the BIOS setting!) and reboot windows and linux twice for voodo reasons.

Re: Black screen after login if using over 60 hz on the monitor

Thanks! So I disabled the fast-start in Windows, but it didn't change a thing.

Let me guide you through my data.
I just rebooted my PC and logged into Arch. One of my displays works normally (DP-2), the other one (DP-4) is black.

I am posting xrandr output:

Most likely unrelated as well, but this

[     4.094] (**) |   |-->Monitor "Monitor0"

[     4.094] (**) |-->Input Device "Keyboard0"
[     4.094] (**) |-->Input Device "Mouse0"

is garbage cruft, remove "/etc/X11/xorg.conf"

Back OT

the other one (DP-4) is black

Does this extend to the mouse cursor?

I suspect the issue is merely the compositor, log out of gnome, into a console (ctrl+alt+f3) and move away ~/.config/monitors.xml
Also enable https://wiki.archlinux.org/title/NVIDIA … de_setting
1. because otherwise you'd soon be hit by the simpledrm blessing
2. it'll get you drm/edid's which gnome might or not rely on

Re: Black screen after login if using over 60 hz on the monitor

Thanks seth! I completed all of the above steps. Removed xorg.conf, moved monitors.xml and added `options nvidia-drm modeset=1` to `/etc/modprobe.d/nvidia.conf`.
Monitor settings were reset back to default, which is 4k@60Hz. I manually set it to 144Hz. After doing this, the black screen problem is still happening after every reboot.

Some observations:
* When increasing the refresh rate from 60Hz to 144Hz, the M32UC immediately gets the black screen. On the dialog "Do you want to keep those settings?" I choose "No" and then retry the same thing -- increasing refresh rate from 60Hz to 144Hz. It always works the second time and the M32UC successfully sets 144Hz without the black screen problem.
* The issue occurs when logging in after reboot, BUT not when unlocking, even if it stayed locked for hours.
* The mouse cursor is NOT visible on the blacked out screen. I can drag the cursor to the blacked out screen, but it is not displayed. I can still increase and decrease the brightness of this black screen using DDC/CI and I can see monitor backlight actually increasing and decreasing.

What I also observe is that on Windows, the monitor changes are much smoother. For example, when changing the resolution or refresh rate. I takes like half a second on Windows, but a few seconds on Linux.

Do you still think it is the compositor?

Re: Black screen after login if using over 60 hz on the monitor

I was able to enable Wayland on NVIDIA to test whether the issue persists.

The steps I've taken to make it work:
* Add `GRUB_CMDLINE_LINUX_DEFAULT="... nvidia_drm.modeset=1"` in /etc/default/grub.
* Rebuild grub with `sudo grub-mkconfig -o /boot/grub/grub.cfg`
* Calling `sudo ln -s /dev/null /etc/udev/rules.d/61-gdm.rules`

After that, Gnome Wayland was available. Unfortunately, the issue still persists on Gnome Wayland if more than 60 Hz refresh rate is used.

What's so special about the display connected to the rightmost GPU port? Why it is always this one that gets black?
FYI, if I add a third monitor (other than M32UC) to the setup and connect it to the rightmost GPU port, all the monitors work well.
It's like there's some kind of operation that is happening only on the rightmost connected monitor that M32UC in 144Hz cannot handle but other monitors can.

Re: Black screen after login if using over 60 hz on the monitor

Do you still think it is the compositor?

No, because of

The mouse cursor is NOT visible on the blacked out screen.

It always works the second time and the M32UC successfully sets 144Hz without the black screen problem.

What if you force the GPU to maximum performance mode in nvidia-settings/powermizer ?

Though

FYI, if I add a third monitor (other than M32UC) to the setup and connect it to the rightmost GPU port, all the monitors work well.

the problem could actually be the output/hdcp (the signal isn't sufficiently strong and the monitor fails the handshake)
Do you have the problem when
a) setting the M32UC to 2560x1440@144Hz (or 1920x1080x144Hz)
b) setting the other monitor to a lower resolution (to reduce the overall signal sideload)

Just to be sure: did you also swap the cables?

Re: Black screen after login if using over 60 hz on the monitor

I set GPU to maximum performance in nvidia-settings/powermizer, but it made no difference.

New facts then:
* The issue occurs on a single monitor as well
* Settings of the other monitor do not affect whether the issue occurs or not (tried tens of configurations). Only settings of the monitor connected to the rightmost GPU DP slot affects whether the issue occurs or not See update in the new post
* Tried multiple DP cables, including the ones shipped with the monitors
* Actually, monitor works well when connected through HDMI cable (HDMI 2.1) -- unfortunately, this is not a solution for me, as I have only 1 HDMI slot in the GPU and I need to connect 2 pieces of M32UC
* When connected through HDMI, switching resolution and switching refresh rate is faster

I will list some of the configurations I tried and whether they work correctly or not:
* 3840x2160@144Hz NOT WORKING
* 3840x2160@120Hz NOT WORKING
* 3840x2160@100Hz NOT WORKING
* 3840x2160@60Hz WORKS
* 3840x2160@50Hz WORKS
* 3840x2160@30Hz WORKS
* 2560x1440@144Hz WORKS
* 1920x1080@144Hz WORKS

I wanted to set the monitor to something between 60 and 100, but I wasn't able to set a custom refresh rate. Is this even possible?

PS.
If I swap the cables in the GPU, the other monitor starts having the issue. It always happens to the one connected to the rightmost GPU DP slot, regardless which monitor it is.

Re: Black screen after login if using over 60 hz on the monitor

Let's call my two M32UC monitors M1 and M2. M1 is connected to DP-2 and M2 is connected to the DP-4 (rightmost).

After some more testing, it looks like settings of M1 affect the behavior of M2.

Compatibility table:

M1 settings        | M2 settings       | state
-------------------------------------------------
3840x2160@144Hz    | 3840x2160@144Hz   | M2 NOT WORKING
3840x2160@144Hz    | 3840x2160@60Hz    | M2 WORKS
3840x2160@60Hz     | 3840x2160@144Hz   | M2 WORKS
3840x2160@60Hz     | 3840x2160@60Hz    | M2 WORKS

Also, something surprising for me. This is how my display settings look like when M1 is @144Hz and M2 is @60Hz:
sApB3Cs.png

But when I set both monitors to 144Hz they look like this:
fDFOfPY.png

And when I set both to 60Hz they look like this:
QbcrOMF.png

The name of the monitor changes. And the issue occurs always when both are displayed as "... 32"

Re: Black screen after login if using over 60 hz on the monitor

Let's take a look at the EDIDs, https://aur.archlinux.org/packages/edid-decode-git

for OUT in /sys/class/drm/card0*; do echo $OUT; edid-decode $OUT/edid; echo "================="; done

Does the GPU manual say anything about restrictions on the DP outputs?

this is not a solution for me, as I have only 1 HDMI slot in the GPU and I need to connect 2 pieces of M32UC

What's the problem w/ using the left DP and the HDMI port?

Re: Black screen after login if using over 60 hz on the monitor

> What's the problem w/ using the left DP and the HDMI port?

That would be fine, if it worked. The port layout is [HDMI DP DP DP]. When one display is connected to HDMI and the other one is connected to one of the DPs, the latter still has the issue.

But since HDMI alone seems to work fine, I was thinking about buying HDMI-DP cable. I would use HDMI on the monitor side and DP on the GPU side. But don't know if it would help, what do you think?

This is the content of the edid files:

Re: Black screen after login if using over 60 hz on the monitor

But don't know if it would help, what do you think?

When one display is connected to HDMI and the other one is connected to one of the DPs, the latter still has the issue.

Introducing adapters isn't going to make anything better here.

DTD:  3840x2160  143.999345 Hz  16:9    315.359 kHz   1266.480000 MHz (aspect 16:9, no 3D stereo)

DTD:  3840x2160  159.999766 Hz  16:9    349.599 kHz   1370.430000 MHz (aspect 16:9, no 3D stereo)

120Hz is the default cvt1 reduced blanking, 144Hz is a pretty aggressive modeline to push down the signal and 160Hz only shows up in card0-DP-3 ?
https://www.displayninja.com/gigabyte-m32uc-review/ makes it sound as if one monitor was overclocked?

The "Maximum image size" is 70 cm x 39 cm in either case and the names from the gnome dialog don't show up anywhere, it probably guess them out of a lookup table.

Edit: do you try to use vsync (see nvidia-settings)?

Re: Black screen after login if using over 60 hz on the monitor

> makes it sound as if one monitor was overclocked?
Yes, overclocking is an option available in OSD settings. I was tinkering with OSD options to find a combination that would work.
I left this particular monitor with "Overclocking: Enabled", but I wasn't using 160Hz. Anyway, disabling or enabling OC doesn't change the issue, I checked it multiple times.

> do you try to use vsync (see nvidia-settings)?
I tried to find it, but I cannot see it. Can you help me finding it? It doesn't seem to be available in nvidia-settings.
I found g-sync option, tried enabling for both monitors it but it doesn't change the issue.

Also, the behavior today changed a bit:

M1 settings        | M2 settings       | state
-------------------------------------------------
3840x2160@144Hz    | 3840x2160@144Hz   | M2 NOT WORKING
3840x2160@144Hz    | 3840x2160@60Hz    | M2 WORKS
3840x2160@60Hz     | 3840x2160@144Hz   | M2 NOT WORKING
3840x2160@60Hz     | 3840x2160@60Hz    | M2 WORKS

It seems like it isn't entirely deterministic after all.

Re: Black screen after login if using over 60 hz on the monitor

Sorry, I started at VRR (variable refresh rate) and took a turn to G-SYNC mid-word, the latter is what I meant (while they're techincally the same)

Also, the behavior today changed a bit:

Are you still running in maximum performance mode (and did you when you found the other behavior)?

Re: Black screen after login if using over 60 hz on the monitor

Sorry, I disabled maximum performance right after testing that it doesn't help.

But I retested with it enabled, doesn't seem to change a thing:

M1 settings        | M2 settings       | state
-------------------------------------------------
3840x2160@144Hz    | 3840x2160@144Hz   | M2 NOT WORKING
3840x2160@144Hz    | 3840x2160@60Hz    | BOTH WORK
3840x2160@60Hz     | 3840x2160@144Hz   | M2 NOT WORKING
1920x1080@60Hz     | 3840x2160@100Hz   | M2 NOT WORKING
3840x2160@144Hz    | DISCONNECTED      | M1 NOT WORKING
DISCONNECTED       | 3840x2160@144Hz   | M2 NOT WORKING

Re: Black screen after login if using over 60 hz on the monitor

It has rather gotten much worse?
What GPU specifically is this? (Vendor/Model, not nvidia, but MSI, Gigabyte, ASUS, …)

If the outputs work less when more power is distributed to the 3D core there seems to be some limit and pot. power distribution issue (you didn't just forget to attache the 6/8-pin dedicated power supply, did you?)
Does the behavior perhaps depend on the temperature?
Have you tried to underclock the GPU?

Re: Black screen after login if using over 60 hz on the monitor

I don't think it has gotten worse. I think I mentioned at the beginning: connecting a single M32UC 3840x2160@144Hz doesn't work unless it's through HDMI.

My GPU is FE (Founders Edition), so cooler design from NVIDIA. It is connected through the 12VHPWR cable included with my 1200W bequiet PSU. GPU works well at full load and is able to reach the target power levels.

Idle GPU temps are 30-40, so I don't think they could matter.

Re: Black screen after login if using over 60 hz on the monitor

That's news to me and sounds extremely weird.

Let's get back to

It works normally on the login screen but displays only black screen after logging in. This only happens if the refresh rate is set to 100, 120 or 144 Hz, but not on 60 Hz (default).
When it gets black, I can make it to work again by locking and unlocking the system or unplugging and plugging the monitor cable.
It seems to me like there's 60 Hz refresh rate on the login screen and then, after logging in, system tries to set the display to 144 Hz and fails.

in particular check the monitor OSDs what frequency is actually used during the login screen.

Next to gnome you're likely using GDM?
We'll simplify that a bit: install xorg-xinit,  xorg-twm and xterm
Then boot the multi-user.target (2nd link below), log into the console and run "startx"
Check the behavior. Only use xrandr, don't start anything gnome (as that might drag in some config services and mess things up)

Re: Black screen after login if using over 60 hz on the monitor

Hey, I stopped posting because I wasn't sure if the problem persists. Previously it was 100% reproducible, but it is not anymore.
Today I did 10 reboots to test that. At the beginning there was a streak it working. So the results are like this: W W W N N N N W N N. Where W means works (both M32UC works) and N means M2 did NOT work properly.

There's more updates: I got a third monitor - different brand (LG) but also 4k 144Hz. Let's call it M3. Now I am using M3 in place of M1 (connected to DP-2) and M2 still doesn't work properly.
@seth do you think this is firmware issue in the monitor or driver issue in the GPU? It works correctly when logging in to Windows.

Alspo check that for windows.

GDM uses a secondary X11 server and defaults to wayland and I wonder whether that messes things up.

The non-deterministic results suggest some race, powe or temperature (your success line is heavily biased towards the early boots…) condition, HDCP perhaps just fails and the usual suspect for that is the cable hmm
(No idea whether the windows drivers have a more robust hdcp implementation)

Re: Black screen after login if using over 60 hz on the monitor

Forgot to mention:
Tried booting with multi-user.target and running startx: the same behavior. When in console M2 works just fine, but after running startx only M1 displayed image and M2 stayed black.

Regarding the boot screens:
* In Windows it's 144 Hz in the login screen
* In Linux it's 60 Hz in the login screen

That gave me an idea: I modified gdm monitors.xml file to run the monitors in 144Hz on login screen.

This kind of solves my problem: M2 fails to set 144 Hz on the GDM screen, but after logging in both M1 and M2 work.
M32UC fails to use 144Hz in the first attempt, but it works fine the second try. I am not perfectly happy with this solution, as ultimately something IS broken. But it works for now...

EDIT: It is likely that the reason it worked fine on Windows is the same: it was failing to run 144Hz on login screen, but the second attempt after logging in worked fine.

Re: Black screen after login if using over 60 hz on the monitor

If this is a de-facto single-user system you might want to ditch GDM and boot/start into a (locked) GDM session and then the xinitrc script could juggle the resolutions a bit if this pans out to be a reliable way to activate the output at higher refresh rates.
