nouveau: cannot switch between ttys

Hello,
my issue is simple: with the nouveau driver, on my laptop, if I try to switch to another tty with ctrl-alt-fX, the screen freezes and the sound stops playing on my main tty.

I can switch back to the main tty.

It works fine with nvidia driver.

I'm not using a login manager, just plain startx from a tty for my first login.

what are my options?

1. Looking at the system journal whether nouveau issues some errors/warnings for this
2.

It works fine with nvidia driver.
