[SOLVED] Brother DCP-T420W not printing

Hello everyone,

I wonder if anyone can help me solve this problem. I have a printer Brother DCP-T420W. I tested in two other systems from friends, Ubuntu Mate, works without any configuration and Linux Mint, had to install drivers downloaded from Brother's website.
Here at Arch Linux, i use the aur driver "brother-dcpt420w 3.5.0-1".

This is the result after i press makepgk -si:

lpadmin -p DCPT420W -E -v usb://Brother/DCP-T420W?serial=U66854H2H406626 -P /usr/share/cups/model/Brother/brother_dcpt420w_printer_en.ppd

After that, using system printers manager i have DCTP420W available but, when i press print test page, says tha the test page was sent and printed, but nothing comes out of the printer.

Cups service is enabled and active.

The driver likely relies on https://archlinux.org/packages/extra/x8 … ostscript/
If not, https://wiki.archlinux.org/title/CUPS/Troubleshooting
Raise the debug level, restart cups, try to print and post the log.

In time, thanks for the help in advance, i really wanna use Arch Linux, in conjunction with my printer, it is a fantastic distro.

Glad to say that is working now

After some research i found the solution in a another forum (i don't know if i can post the link over here). So i'll reproduce here the steps:

1-) Uninstalled the drivers from yay;
2-) Downloaded the deb driver from Brother support page ;
3-) Installed debtap from aur;
4-) Set the default editor for vim: export EDITOR=vim;
5-) At the driver download place, run the command: debtap dcpt420wpdrv-3.5.0-1.i386.deb;
6-) When asked if need to edit the files to be created, choose option 4, the wrote vim;
7-) Edit the architecture to i686 to x86_64 in the .PKGINFO;
8-) Delete these lines in .INSTALL file: if [ “$(which semanage 2> /dev/null)” != ‘’ ];then;
9-) Then execute sudo pacman -U dcpt420wpdrv-3.5.0-1-x86_64.pkg.tar.zst.

After that the printer is working fine. Now i'll look for the scanner, but it is another thing to solve.

The beauty of Arch Linux, here we have a more comprehensive idea how Linux works.

I'll mark this post as solved.

Not sure what the impact .PKGINFO and .INSTALL have there, but
1. semanage is part o SELinux, so you apaprently activated some SELinux specific code?
2. *only* deleting " if [ “$(which semanage 2> /dev/null)” != ‘’ ];then;" would get you a syntax error.

The AUR applies https://aur.archlinux.org/cgit/aur.git/ … r-dcpt420w and since frankly your actions seem otherwise inert, this would be the most likely cause of trouble.
Or the result is purely co-incidental, because

your error log doesn't look like you had used the driver from the AUR package at all

Hello,

I bought this printer some months ago, because of Linux support. This ins't the first time and installation that i tried to make it work. You're right, very strange the way i did to configure, but installing only with the provided AUR package never worked and there several reports like mine across the Internet with similar issue. But, for me, matters that it is functional and i can return to use Arch Linux. Thanks for your support and shared knowledge Seth. Have a nice day!

I understand that, but poking around until it works without understanding why bears the risk that you'll end up in that situation again.
Also it would probably good to raise this w/ the AUR package maintainer to get that fixed.

Did the debtap-created package install more dependencies?
If you sill have any of the packages, feel free to upload them somewhere - maybe there's some obvious difference.
