OpenOffice font rendering problem

First off, I'm on 64 bit Arch.

When I copy and paste documents from the web into OpenOffice, some fonts don't get rendered properly. Things like quotes come up as strange characters. I'm currently testing a RC build of 2.1 (thanks AndyRTR).

Re: OpenOffice font rendering problem

I'm using KDE and Konqueror (although it happens with Firefox also). It seems that so far the only way I can reproduce it is to copy stuff out of Yahoo mail and paste it into OpenOffice.

Here is more or less what I'm looking at. Those are quotes around "nearby":

measurements made “nearbyâ€ン and

Except the character before the 'and' is actually a square until I pasted it here. If I paste into KOffice, all the characters come out correct, but I lose the HTML formatting (which I want).

Generally speaking punctuation is the only thing affected.

I do have a question:

Could it possibly be the formatting on the other end? What I mean is, the mail I'm copying is all from one person and he's writing in Word. Could there be something strange here?

Re: OpenOffice font rendering problem

I know what it is, but I just don't know how to stop it. It's Microsoft's encoding of their punctuation marks (Surprise!). It may only be their HTML documents; I'm not sure. I've found that 'curly' quotes, explanation marks, and ellipses are all affected. There may be more, but that's what I've found so far.
