Linux 6.5.x won't play well with SDDM

For some reason a system booting the recent 6.5.x kernels hangs when it hits SDDM.

The system, when booted with the recent LTS kernels,  starts SDDM no problems.

Problem seems to be unique to an old  ACER laptop with intel cpu
and nvidia ( NV driver ) card.  This system has been pretty solid over years of Arch updates.
Other systems AMD/AMDGPU and an older DELL laptop with intel cpu/intelGPU work fine.

What might there be in the 6.5.x branch that might cause this?

I'd be super-curious to check if you hit [1].

FWIW I have SDDM working fine with a 6.5.x kernel and hybrid graphics (intel/nvidia) - so perhaps this is specific to your exact hardware

FWIW I have SDDM working fine with a 6.5.x kernel and hybrid graphics (intel/nvidia) - so perhaps this is specific to your exact hardware

Minor correction, I'm using FOSS driver nouveau not nvidia NV drivers

Nouveau hasn't been updated in quite a while looking at the repos.
Must be solid.

I'd be super-curious to check if you hit [1].

Log shows an error in SDDM  package following this line:

kernel: sddm-greeter[600]: memfd_create() called without MFD_EXEC or MFD_NOEXEC_SEAL set

...so probably not.

Do you use xf86-video-nouveau? What if you remove it?
Alternatively see https://aur.archlinux.org/packages/nvidia-340xx-dkms

Yes, use nouveau, pulled it and same thing.  LTS no problem, 6.5.x hangs.

I used to use the nvidia corporate drivers before they dropped support for older GPUs.

Either ways, the only key difference is the 6.5.x branch.  I notice, that the NVidia proprietary
drivers have required a patch for each release for some time now.  So I'd say the Nouveau
FOSS driver has done pretty good to get this far without a patch.  Question is why this branch and why
now???

Re: Linux 6.5.x won't play well with SDDM

The nouveau kernel module is developed in tree it gets "patched" w/ pretty much every kernel release.
https://github.com/torvalds/linux/commi … rm/nouveau

One of those commits or maybe a change to the general drm code will have caused this.

You need downstream patches for the 340xx series because nvidia stopped developing it.

Hmmm...  seems like a dead end here?  How do I get their attention on this and what do I tell them
is the locale of the problem?

Re: Linux 6.5.x won't play well with SDDM

Could this be related to an issue that I have with the 6.5.x kernels? I'm using the NVIDIA driver and even though I have nvidia_drm.modeset=1 in my kernel command line, simpledrm is not deactivated although SDDM has not been a problem for me.

With the lts kernel, no simpledrm: http://0x0.st/H4Y9.txt

Please post your complete system journal for the boot:

sudo journalctl -b | curl -F 'file=@-' 0x0.st

Re: Linux 6.5.x won't play well with SDDM

Boot journal: http://0x0.st/H4kz.txt (Note: I have set both nvidia_drm.modeset=1 & nvidia-drm.modeset=1 because I came across a disagreement over which was the correct name of the parameter.)

As far as I can tell, simpledrm is not causing any problems on my system, even though I have seen it noted in multiple places that simpledrm interferes with other drm drivers when it should be deactivated but is not. For me, this is only a curious inconsistency. I thought that it might be related to the OP's issue, though.

I only learned of it by working with the KDE team to resolve my system's issue with running Wayland together with the NVIDIA driver. It turns out that the GBM-related environment variables recommended in the Arch Wiki article on Wayland (GBM_BACKEND=nvidia-drm & __GLX_VENDOR_LIBRARY_NAME=nvidia) were causing my problem with NVIDIA/Wayland incompatibility. Once they were unset and removed from /etc/environment, Wayland started for me without issue.

I did still have some really annoying flickering of my browser panel (Firefox), but that was resolved by setting MOZ_ENABLE_WAYLAND=1. (It is noted in the Arch Wiki Firefox article that this environment variable is required to be set when running Firefox under Wayland. However, I never observed any flickering of Firefox under Wayland until I replaced my AMD GPU with my current NVIDIA GPU.)

I'm running the 6.5.7-hardened kernel and a Wayland session now. Wayland appears to be perfectly stable after about 90 minutes.

I don't see how forcing the driver you're using anyway would be able to cause anyway could cause problems hmm

Re: Linux 6.5.x won't play well with SDDM

That worked:
drm_info: http://0x0.st/H4GM.txt
boot log: http://0x0.st/H4kT.txt

I don't think that it was causing any problems. It was just a detour while I was trying to figure out the Firefox flicker problem. Thanks. :-)

I'm having exactly the same problem in another Linux distribution, with Nvidia graphics card (NV96), and nouveau driver
sddm with kernel 6.2 behaves perfectly
sddm with kernel 6.5 crashes (it sometimes appears garbled, it sometimes does not load)

Seems to be related to graphics acceleration. If I include the parameter nouveau.noaccel=1 in grub, then sddm starts ok with kernel 6.5. But that is the only workaround that I find.

Thank You for this! cool

Using nouveau.noaccel=1 in grub works also with newer kernels.
Just tried it with 6.6.2 and the GT240 card is supposedly NV50... decade old tech.

iirc acceleration may be a mesa thing??? Never the less, it leaves the why question
unanswered.   Something for the up stream experts to wrangle I guess.
