Re: [SOLVED] Grub hangs on boot screen with certain nvidia cards

should I still keep nvidia_drm.modeset=1 in the kernel options

Yes.
It'll keep the simpledrm device away and expose the EDIDs to /sys/class/drm - it's also required if you ever wanna dabble in wayland.

The journal is not supposed to contain sensitive information (at best embarassing if you chose silly host/usernames - and nobody cares)
The disk UUIDs are for collision prevention and your system yells it's NIC MACs into the immediate environment - which is also the only area where this could be of interest.

One possibly pitfall is that sudo gets audited and logged and the call itself *might* contain sensitive data.

Re: [SOLVED] Grub hangs on boot screen with certain nvidia cards

@seth

I know this thread is pretty old and you've long since moved on.  But I'll ask anyway.

I've resurrected my old X99 Designare and it's been kicking my butt.  Had the same issue with the 1080 that's in there, finally got that fixed before finding this thread.

Did you upgrade to F5c from 2018?  I didn't see anything other than F3 and you saying that you found the 2018 dated version.

Back to my question.
Did you notice that our GPU's are getting limited on the PCI bus?  That's what got me to this thread.

Sep 18 22:01:56 kernel: pci 0000:08:00.0: 32.000 Gb/s available PCIe bandwidth, limited by 2.5 GT/s PCIe x16 link at 0000:00:03.0 (capable of 126.016 Gb/s with 8.0 GT/s PCIe x16 link).

Slot 1 is shared with The PCIEX8 slot, but I have nothing in there so that doesn't account for it.

Driving me nuts.

One more thing, if by chance this old rig is still in service can you look on the Peripherals tab and see if you have Above 4G Decoding option.  Manual says it should be there, GB support says it should be there, UEFITool gets a hit on 4G decod, extract the body and there are signs of the backend code but no menu option (At least not in F5c, going to try some older versions, maybe it was deprecated?)

Thanks

This thread isn't about my system.

2.5 GT/s would be the normal limit of PCIe 1.0 but 32GB/s would be more in line w/ PCIe 4 what fits your boards age.
Not sure whether this is a bug or problem.

I suppose you ran into https://archlinux.org/news/nvidia-590-d … l-modules/ ?

Re: [SOLVED] Grub hangs on boot screen with certain nvidia cards

@seth you are correct, you were the one that fix it.  Sorry mate.

Ya this old X99 board had both PCIe 3.0 slots and a single x1 slot that conformed to PCIe 2 standard.  I just got the same AMD boot video card that @haigioli was using, found it on e-bay for $23 smile Going to play around today and see what it changes.  Sorry again for hitting you up.   And yes that was the thread that fixed my 1080 issues.

Thanks again,
Craig
