When I run paru -Syu it returns the following:
:: marked out of date: paru
I've tried
makepkg -si
in the paru directory and that results in trying to reinstall what I already have.
How do I go about updating paru?

it's saying it's flagged as out of date in the AUR, not that your system is out of date.

I'm still confused. I don't think my system is out of date. I'm curious about the AUR helper paru being out of date. Do I need to update the AUR helper and if so how do I go about doing that?

Go to it's page on the AUR website. You'll notice something.

This is a social problem, not a technical one. People keep flagging paru out of date again and again, though it is not. The both upstream author and AUR maintainer pointed that out, but people ignore this.

For their own sanity Morganamillo could just do the relevant bump so that people don't flag it anymore.
FWIW if you don't get these past replies, to have it mentioned here: The only reason 1.11.2 exists is to have rebuilt the binary package against openssl 3. Since you are using the source package, where this relevant build will have already happened when you installed it, there's no point to update the source version, since that didn't change.

Thank you all for your replies.
