[Solved] can't start X on new install (amd graphics)

Hi,
I'm trying to get X working on a new install on an AMD machine. startx produces only a brief black screen, and this log: http://ix.io/4HZt .

There are several error messages, but I don't know which are significant.

lspci -k | grep -A 3 -E "(VGA|3D)" produces:

04:00.0 VGA compatible controller: Advanced Micro Devices, Inc. [AMD/ATI] Lucienne (rev c2)
	Subsystem: Advanced Micro Devices, Inc. [AMD/ATI] Lucienne
	Kernel driver in use: amdgpu
	Kernel modules: amdgpu

I'd be grateful for any pointers!

[  1346.717] (II) Server terminated successfully (0). Closing log file.

Whatever is in xinitrc exited causing X to exit.  What is the contents of ~/.xinitrc?

Thanks -- it didn't exist. Copying the default and editing it to change the program started to i3 worked, and I'm up and running.
