[Solved] Archlinux Drunk with Gnome 45, all after Update.

Hi everyone, it's my post about a problem, which isn't a problem in the sense that it prevents me from using the system, the problem is that the system behaves anomalously after the last update to Gnome 45 with Wayland.

1) During system startup in GDM as soon as I enter the password it doesn't load the graphical environment, but returns to GDM again, on the second attempt the system starts, in short double startup in GDM, strange.
2) After starting gnome, I find everything deactivated, i.e. smooth gnome, the extensions don't start automatically, I have to start them manually every time, not a problem but an annoyance. Then everything works normally.
3) I have also occasionally noticed problems connecting to the NordVPN servers as if it goes to Killswitch, in fact I have to disable it otherwise the network connects after about a couple of minutes.
4) When I suspend the system, the PC hibernates, but it seems to stay on, and when I restart it remains a black screen. It had already happened to me, and I solved it by changing the Suspend custom command string from the keyboard.
5) Double Power Off or Shutdown changes nothing, in practice when I turn it off both from the keyboard and from the case (forced) it returns me to GDM as if it were Ending session, here or I turn it off directly and it returns me to GDM again and the second time it turns off, or at the first GDM I enter gnome again and the second time it shuts down.

System:
OS Archlinux 6.5.6-arch2-1
Shell bash 5.1.16
DE Gnome 45.0
WM Mutter
CPU Ryzen 5 2600x
GPU Radeon RX 590
Driver Vulkan-radeon

Re: [Solved] Archlinux Drunk with Gnome 45, all after Update.

During system startup in GDM as soon as I enter the password it doesn't load the graphical environment, but returns to GDM again, on the second attempt the system starts, in short double startup in GDM, strange.

Means the session crashed.
Please post your complete system journal for the boot:

sudo journalctl -b | curl -F 'file=@-' 0x0.st

The usual cause are incompatible 3rd party extensions and for G45 there's specifically https://gitlab.gnome.org/GNOME/mutter/-/issues/3037
Try to export "MUTTER_DEBUG_KMS_THREAD_TYPE=user", https://wiki.archlinux.org/title/Environment_Variables

Re: [Solved] Archlinux Drunk with Gnome 45, all after Update.

I always disable all the extension then update>reboot open extension and check what is problematic and I can see 7 extensions not compatible.

Re: [Solved] Archlinux Drunk with Gnome 45, all after Update.

hi, thanks for the reply

So, here boot log:
https://0x0.st/H49E.txt

I read the link to the Arch guide on Environment Variables that you posted, but I didn't really understand what to do. I focused on the global variables and those for User, I thought of adding the string:
export "MUTTER_DEBUG_KMS_THREAD_TYPE=user"
in bash_profile
When the system was restarted, the GDM started normally as did the graphic environment at the first try, so I must have done something right. However, the gnome extensions are still disabled, and I haven't shut down the system yet.
However, reading the guide you posted I noticed that there is also a session for Wayland, perhaps I should follow that specifically?

@VoDo
The extensions actually work great, only 2 were incompatible and I removed them, in fact when I restart them manually from the manager they work. The system works for me, these annoyances remain, but evidently they are bugs as I understand it.

@c00ter
I think so

The strangest thing is that I have 2 hard disks in addition to the system one, and when I start gnome the 2 disks appear to be unmounted, now as soon as I click on the extension manager from the extension manager boom everything returns to normal,  reappears dash-to-dock and the other extensions, but the absurd thing is that it automatically remounts the 2 disks where I have the data, without words, all with one click.

Re: [Solved] Archlinux Drunk with Gnome 45, all after Update.

Canonically, put it somewhere into /etc/profile.d - bash probably only randomly gets sourced by the DM.

GDM started normally as did the graphic environment at the first try … system works for me, these annoyances remain

What annoynaces specifically then?

Having to restart the gnome extensions from the manager to get the system configured as it was before the upgrade. Extensions do not start automatically when starting the graphical environment after GDM.

Re: [Solved] Archlinux Drunk with Gnome 45, all after Update.

I installed a second manager from flatpack because the default one didn't manage some extensions for me, maybe it dubbed them, I try to remove the one from flatpack maybe in Gnome 45 they conflict.

However, I added export "MUTTER_DEBUG_KMS_THREAD_TYPE=user" to a new file on /etc/profile.d and upon reboot the double GDM returned, by any chance should I have given it permissions?

Re: [Solved] Archlinux Drunk with Gnome 45, all after Update.

Ok maybe I solved it brutally, Gnome should be treated badly smile

However:
1) I removed the manual extensions I had installed in ~/.local/share/gnome-shell/extensions, be careful not to remove the default extensions found in /usr/share/gnome-shell/extensions.
2) I removed the second manager installed by flatpak, i.e. gnome-shell-extension-manager, and left the default manager with the green puzzle icon, so to speak, which is then called gnome-extension-app.
3) I restarted the system all smoothly, in the GDM screen everything started at the first try.
4) Once gnome was loaded, I reinstalled the same extensions that I had removed and inserted in ~/.local/share/gnome-shell/extensions
5) Restarted everything, GDM works the first time, and the extensions load automatically at startup.

The idea came to me while looking at the boot log under:

Oct 12 17:16:01 archlinux gnome-shell[775]: Extension apps-menu@gnome-shell-extensions.gcampax.github.com already installed in /usr/share/gnome-shell/extensions/apps-menu@gnome -shell-extensions.gcampax.github.com. /usr/share/gnome-shell/extensions/apps-menu@gnome-shell-extensions.gcampax.github.com will not be loaded

I thought maybe the daemon was seeing "Drunk Arch" duplicates and hence the double booting of GDM and the extensions not starting automatically. Everything seems resolved, let's hope for the best.

Thanks.

@VoDo, yes but this one's special-stupid because the script loader got changed and so every single extension became incompatible between 44 and 45

Yes, I solved it, everything seems to work, even switching off, suspending and restarting. Apparently the problem was the extensions that had to be reinstalled from scratch.

I edited the topic title.

Developers had plenty of time to fix it. I understand most extensions are just some school projects and after a few months no one cares so why should Gnome?

Like this one

Thanks for looking into this, @enecciari! I wanted to say that yes, I plan to support GNOME 45, but am currently out on baby bonding leave and haven't really found the time to dig into it. I've been proud to keep TopHat compatible with older GNOME releases and really don't want to break that because of this change. In the worst case, I'll try to get a separate version for GNOME 45 onto extensions.gnome.org, but I'm not sure maintaining two code bases will be sustainable going forward.

Re: [Solved] Archlinux Drunk with Gnome 45, all after Update.

I don't suppose you'd want to step into an extension developer position, as an apparently older and wiser user, and make sure no extension ever breaks again? WTF does age or a personal life outside of Linux have to do with it? These people give freely of their time and efforts not to scratch your personal itch, but their own. That's the way this works, and that's the way it's supposed to work. Otherwise it all falls apart. I always feel grateful when they share something with the community that works for my benefit. Sometimes I even get to give-back a little, and you know what? It makes me feel good. I think that's probably what Linux is all about, don't you?

Otherwise, it's like the fat lady at the free, all-you-can-eat buffet saying, "This food's not tasty, and there ain't enough of it!" smile

The point was that it's in the news because it systematically and predictably broke everything.

I understand most extensions are just some school projects

Most code is just hello-world written by some student - that doesn't mean compilers can just ignore compatibility.
Also gnome-extensions are used a lot for functionality, eg.

someone here uses at least seven of them tongue

Re: [Solved] Archlinux Drunk with Gnome 45, all after Update.

@seth: In trying to solve a similar problem after an upgrade(?) to Fedora39, Gnome 45 (no power options to shutdown/reboot/etc.), I (stupidly) used your command from your first response here to send to 0x0.st.  Now it appears that all of my system info is out on the public web!  I've tried curl -X DELETE http://0x0.st/[file url], but get a 405 method not allowed error.  How do I remove the file created on 0x0.st?

https://0x0.st/ explains the API.
Unless you preseved the X-Token from the upload to authorize the deletion, you can't.

The journal isn't supposed to contain any kind of sensitve data so that's not that much of a disaster, but (PSA) don't just blindly copy and paste stuff from the internet into a shell without thinking at least a split-second about what you're doing.

Thanks for the instant reply, Seth.  I actually hadn't encountered curl before and didn't realize its power.  The journal does have my username and eth0 mac address, but I guess that's not <too> bad.

Now back to figuring out how to get a Gnome shutdown button back...something I haven't seen anyone else encountering in this way.
