Hi,
Just recently installed Arch and installed Gnome-Shell. I have sound but I cannot control the volume from top bar, either when reduced completely the sound mutes otherwise when raised the sound remains the same. when I connect my Bluetooth headphones then the sound 'Volume' changes as it should but it doesn't change with the inbuilt speaker from my iMac
I can change volume but from individual apps only
Any help on how to diagnose and fix this would be appreciated.

Welcome to the forums. I'm not using Gnome, and I don't have an iMac so I cannot help directly. Any chance you are using an external monitor with your iMac that supports audio?

Hi, thanks.
no external monitor at the moment.
I have always had problem with sound driver installation so any help would be appreciated.
I believe i have a problem with pipewire-media-session and wireplumber conflict but I'm not sure why that is and how to fix this no sound problem. I have tried many things which have been provided on other posts and I feel that i have completely messed up my system, and now I have no sound at all.
So now posting my alsa information

Got also audio problems since the last update:
* 100% Volume is not as loud as before (by a lot)
* In gnome-control-center switching between devices does not work anymore (but over the quick-bar it works)
* Default left-right balance is way off
I upgraded to Gnome 45 already for a few days (2023-10-13) - but the problems just started today with the update today (2023-10-17).
Here the audio and Gnome related packages which where in the full update (-Syu) today :
alsa-card-profiles (1:0.3.81-2 -> 1:0.3.82-1)
mpg123 (1.32.2-1 -> 1.32.3-1)
faudio (23.09-1 -> 23.10-1)
gnome-control-center (45.0-1 -> 45.0+r41+g454955aad-1)
libpipewire (1:0.3.81-2 -> 1:0.3.82-1)
pipewire (1:0.3.81-2 -> 1:0.3.82-1)
mutter (45.0-1 -> 45.0+r49+g8d3d8b86e5-1)
gnome-shell (1:45.0-1 -> 1:45.0+r17+gebf2f8036-1)
gst-plugin-pipewire (1:0.3.81-2 -> 1:0.3.82-1)
lib32-faudio (23.09-1 -> 23.10-1)So maybe we can track down a specific version.

same here! my usb microphone transformed it self in to an output device, while as a microphone turns off and on in a infinite loop. but i loaded the LTS Kernel (was using zen) and it works just fine. So i'm not sure if this is connected. Of course this happened in the day i was having a online interview... ![]()
Update: After a new zen kernel update, it's fixed (for me)!

So today again I have the original problem which I posted before --- sound is there and i can change the sound individually but not with gnome top bar or directly from my keyboard
... don't know how to fix this

sudo fuser -v /dev/snd/*if the packages in your previous post are still the same, what you'll generally want to do is install pipewire-pulse and replace pipewire-media-session with wireplumber.

Now the sound is there but the graphical volume control doesn't control the actual sound output, when I lower the sound to minimum it is muted but once I raise it from the minimum one level and upwards the sound is the same till max. I have to change the sound level from individual apps that is playing the sound ie. when i watch youtube from firefox I have to change the sound from the app within the youtube, or if playing a song in music player i have to change the volume level from that app itself then only it changes

I have tried installing other linuxos eg ubuntu, fedora, manjaro --- I still have the same problem. I have even installed installed kde on ubuntu just to see if it is a gnome problem but it was not as I still had same problem with it. So this is not only Gnome 45 issue as I though before. I even tried to install install pulseaudio but that also didn't solve my issue.
